Cohen, Rue
The name 'Cohen' is an adaptation of the old designation 'kohain'. This Hebrew word, meaning either 'noble servant' or 'nobleman', was given as a distinction to Aaron, the brother of Moses, and all of his male patrilineal descendants. The kohanim were chosen to serve as priests, performing special duties and offering up sacrifices in the Temple of Jerusalem.
