Chapter 28: Betrayal

[Scene opens on the Yggdrasil bridge. Camera from right side. Fei and Sigurd are having a conversation.]
SIGURD
"Fei, the young master hasn't come back yet. What's he up
to?
Would it be too much to ask for you to go and call him for me?"
FEI
"No problem!
He's probably wining and dining with the Captain of
the Thames!"
[Fei jumps down to the men's quarters before he leaves. Scene change.]
[Scene opens on the men's quarters. Fei talks to Hammer and Rico, getting reactions.]
HAMMER
"Where is this place? Never heard of the 'Thames' before."
RICO
"Don't get me wrong. That doesn't mean I'm on your side."
[Fei leaves and goes to Margie's Room. Scene change.]
[Scene opens on Margie's Room. Fei walks up to Margie.]
MARGIE
"I was the only one who escaped Shakhan's grip by fleeing Nisan
with Bart...
I wonder if the sisters are all right... The young master will
help them too, won't he?"
[Margie turns away.]
MARGIE
"Even though it was the sect's wish, it still left a bitter
feeling..."
[Fei leaves the Yggdrasil. Scene change.]
[Begin music: "Thames, Man of the Sea"]
[Scene opens on the Thames' dock. Fei heads for the elevator and takes it to the beer hall. Scene change.]
[Scene opens on the beer hall by the captain's table from before. Camera behind Bart who's drinking with the captain and telling stories. Fei walks in besides the captain as Bart rattles on.]
BART
"They came out... one after another...
slam, bam, crash... that's
how it happened..."
FEI
"Hey Bart, Sigurd was asking about you..."
CAPTAIN
"Gahahahahaha.
Of course, if you're not strong, you can't be a
man of the sea."
[Bart turns to the captain and raises his right elbow.]
BART
"Yeah, check this arm out..."
[Scene cut to behind the captain as he thrusts out his rod.]
CAPTAIN
Proof!
[Scene cut to the side of Bart. The captain thrusts his rod out in the other direction as they turn towards camera.]
CAPTAIN
Of the men!
[Scene cut to behind Bart. The captain sheathes his rod as the two turn towards camera again.]
CAPTAIN
Of the sea!!
FEI
...
[Camera pans down to behind Bart as the captain and him start guffawing.]
CAPTAIN
"Gahahahaha."
BART
"Wah ha ha ha."
[Bart keeps laughing. A crew member walks in behind the captain.]
CREW MEMBER
Captain, your first mate is calling you.
[Bart and the captain turn to the crewman.]
CAPTAIN
"Oi, he's interrupting our men of the sea story.
That Hans,
he's such an unrefined chap. What does he want now?"
CREW MEMBER
Our Lady seems to have returned...
[Fei turns around.]
FEI
"Our Lady... Oh, you mean Elly!"
CAPTAIN
"Fool! Why didn't you tell me earlier."
CREW MEMBER
Well...
FEI
"Well, let's go."
[The four walk back towards the bridge. Scene change. Stop music.]
[Scene opens on the bridge of the Thames. Camera on Hans' side, in front of the beer hall door. Fei, the captain and Bart walk in from the beer hall and turn towards Hans.]
FEI
"Where's Elly?"
[Hans turns around and walks towards Fei a step.]
HANS
"She's seeing to the Gear. She will be along any time now."
BART
"You mean... she was able to escape?"
[The captain turns to Fei.]
CAPTAIN
"Well, it's good for you. Right, Fei?"
[Fei turns to the captain.]
FEI
"Ah, yeah."
[The screw elevator door opens behind the captain. Camera pan to up and behind Fei. Elly walks in. The door closes.]
FEI
"Elly, are you okay?"
ELLY
"... Yeah."
BART
"..."
ELLY
"What's that submarine?"
FEI
"Oh, you mean the Yggdrasil?
It took a bad bashing, so now it's
here, at Thames, for repairs."
ELLY
"I see...
Can I rest for a while? ... I'm exhausted."
FEI
"That's a good idea."
[Bart turns to Fei.]
BART
"Fei, it's my ship."
[The captain turns to Bart.]
CAPTAIN
"Oi, oi. She said she's tired. Let her rest."
ELLY
"Well, I'm going."
[Elly walks back into the screw elevator and leaves. Hans turns back to his work. After a second, Bart looks down with his arms folded.]
BART
"... I don't like this."
[Fei turns to Bart.]
FEI
"Bart, you're still..."
[Bart shakes his head slowly and looks up.]
BART
"It's not like that. She won't backstab us.
I was raised around
thugs and charlatans. I can tell just by looking in her eyes."
FEI
"Then you accept Elly..."
[Bart looks down and shakes his head slowly, then looks up again.]
BART
"That's why I can't. She may be okay with it.
But what about her
family back home? Do you think she can live with that?
Can she do that? Just
get rid of her family? She has to decide.
She... Elly is probably worrying
about that. We can't involve people who have attachments."
FEI
"Bart..."
[Bart turns to the elevator door.]
BART
"Hmph, well do whatever you want."
[Bart joins Fei. Fei walks over to Hans.]
HANS
"Captain's great, isn't he? Because of him the work doesn't run
out."
[Fei walks over to the captain.]
CAPTAIN
"Everything's okay. The lady came back unharmed."
[Fei and Bart leave to the elevator. Scene change.]
[Begin music: "Thames, Man of the Sea"]
[Scene opens on the screw elevator. Fei and Bart take it down to the Yggdrasil. Scene change.]
[Begin music: "Leftovers of the Dreams of the Strong" - skip intro]
[Fei and Bart go to the bridge. Scene change.]
[Scene opens on the bridge. Fei and Bart go to Sigurd.]
SIGURD
"Young master, where did you go while we were so busy...?
An
international goodwill visit with the Thames? Well, whatever...
Now about
those supplies for the submarine..."
BART
"Oh, that? Let me see... order an additional 16 torpedoes!"
SIGURD
"Yes, sir."
[Sigurd muses.]
SIGURD
"The young master has finally started to realize his position as a
king."
[The duo goes to the infirmary. Scene change.]
[Scene opens in the infirmary. The nurse is there.]
NURSE
Elly was lying down till a minute ago...
[The nurse looks around.]
NURSE
Now that you mention it, I wonder where she went?
[The nurse checks their weight. They head for Margie's room. Scene change.]
[Scene opens on Margie's room. The duo goes to Chu-Chu.]
CHU-CHU
"This place isn't chu familiar.
But it doesn't matter because I
didn't know muchu about Aveh in the first place chu."
[The duo goes to the Gun Room. They head over to Maison.]
MAISON
"Y... young master! I heard all about it.
International amity
with the Thames!? Indeed..."
[Maison turns around.]
MAISON
(... Sob... sob... This old man's efforts weren't all wasted!)
[Maison turns around again.]
MAISON
"How may I be of service?"
[Fei buys stuff.]
MAISON
"I hope I can be of such service again!"
[There are two engineers relaxing in the Gun Room.]
ENGINEER 1
Phew! I no longer have to listen to the roars of the old man
any more.
ENGINEER 2
The engine's restoration is finally finished.
Why don't you
go down the stairs to take a look at our beautiful engine.
[Fei and Bart head to the men's quarters. Rico is there.]
RICO
"That girl had the eyes of a prisoner."
[Fei and Bart leave and enter the engine room. Scene change. Stop music.]
[Scene opens on the engine room, behind the main engine. A dog is sitting on the lower path around it. The mechanic is on the higher path, examining the engine like usual. Elly walks in from the right hand side, stops just in view, and shakes her head, then she looks down. Then she walks up closer to the dog and stops. The dog turns and barks at her three times. The mechanic turns around.]
MECHANIC
Whaaat's up? Martle? Eh? Huh?
[The mechanic sees Elly and turns to her.]
MECHANIC
Hey, Miss.
I heard you got caught. Are you okay?
[The dog barks another three times. The mechanic turns to the dog.]
MECHANIC
Easy, Martle! It's just the Solarian girl. You don't need to
bark!
[Elly turns to the mechanic.]
ELLY
"It's an animal, so it can't help it.
By the way, the first mate
wants to see you."
[The mechanic turns to Elly.]
MECHANIC
... Oh? Oh, I see. Sorry.
[The mechanic leaves. Elly walks back the direction she entered. Scene cut to in front of the engineers' controls. Elly walks in front of them and looks at them. Camera pan to behind Elly, keeping her on the right side of the screen. Elly puts her hands on the controls, then hesitates a second. Then she clicks a couple buttons. A shifting noise is heard as an engine exhaust opens in the front left of the screen. Then the others behind it on that side open in the same fashion. Scene cut to behind Elly at a distance from the other side of the engine. The exhaust port in the foreground opens in the same way. Then the two behind it pop up as well, making the same noise. Scene cut to behind Elly at the entrance as Fei and Bart walk in.]
FEI
"Elly!!"
[Camera pan in close to Elly at the controls. She turns around slowly and just looks for a few seconds.]
ELLY
"... Fei...?"
[A shrill scream is heard. Elly falls to the floor, unconscious, as if she was shot. The main engine begins to shudder and flash as its exhaust port opens above it. Sparks begin to fly out of it. The engine room begins to flash red at fast intervals. Scene cut to the side of Elly at a distance beyond the catwalk. Fei runs in and kneels in front of Elly.]
FEI
"Elly!!"
[Bart walks in and stops at Fei's side.]
BART
"I knew it all along... This moll's a mole!"
[Bart walks behind Fei to the engine controls. He looks down with his arms folded.]
BART
"Damn it! What the hell did she do!? What am I gonna do!!"
[Bart shakes his head and looks up. Citan walks in from the catwalk. He walks up to the engine, and assumes his thinking pose. Fei gets up and turns around to see him.]
FEI
"Doc! What is this..."
CITAN
"Wait! Do not worry about her. Stopping this is our priority."
[Citan hits a few buttons.]
CITAN
"There... How is this..."
[Scene cut to behind the group at a distance above the entrance catwalk. The sounds fade. The exhaust ports and the main engine fall back into their "cubbyholes" and shut down. Scene cut to previous angle. Fei and Bart look at each other while Citan kneels in front of Elly. Spark residue still flies out of the engine. Fei walks over to Bart.]
BART
"I don't get it. At least when I saw her up there,
she didn't have
the eyes of a traitor."
[Fei examines Elly, who has her eyes closed and is unconscious.]
ELLY
"..."
[Fei talks to Citan.]
CITAN
"... She was given some strong hypnosis."
FEI
"Hypnosis...?"
CITAN
"It is a special hypnotism that makes a person behave in a
pre-programmed way.
A special condition serves as a switch to act... but
until then no strange behavior can be detected.
She looked strange when
coming out of the medical room, so I followed her."
BART
"... Citan, if you thought it was suspicious, you shoulda stopped
her."
CITAN
"Well, if you forcibly stop the behavior while
imprinting,
occasionally it destroys the mind...
But it is true that I
reacted a little late..."
[Citan gets up and turns to the controls. The mechanic walks in from the catwalk. He turns, then stops and looks around the room twice, then turns halfway around again.]
MECHANIC
Wha, what's going on?
Young master, have you done it
again?
CITAN
"It may take a while to fix it..."
[Citan kneels in front of Elly. Fei walks around.]
BART
"It broke again just after getting restored. What am I gonna
do..."
MECHANIC
Did she do this...
Hypnosis? ... That's pretty damned
underhanded even for Solaris!
[The mechanic pauses.]
MECHANIC
How badly are the main engines damaged? I need more time to see
them closely...
But it looks pretty bad. It may take a while.
CITAN
"Anyway, we will take her to the medical room first.
Fei, go to
the room when you are done here. No need to worry. The hypnotist must have been
a good one.
There are no mental scars."
