Chapter 31: The Orphanage

[Begin music: "Emotions"]
[Scene opens on the desert behind the 'Ethos' H.Q. The Yggdrasil travels southeast, past Babel Tower, to Billy's Orphanage. Scene change. Stop music.]

[Begin music: "The Sky, The Clouds, and You"]
[Scene opens on the orphanage. Elly talks to a kid at the entrance.]
KID
Can't see the flying saucer today. Aa~h!
Wanna know about the
flying saucer? Then just ask me!
[Tell me]
[The kid begins to talk very fast.]
KID
Ahem!! Actually it was a long time ago. About 50 years ago, an old
man, Henry Mingas, said
he was taken by the saucer and his body was altered.
Well, no one believed him, but afterward it's said he
had amazing knowledge
and skills he never had before. Then 10 years ago, strange circle shaped marks
were
found in many places. You must've heard about it. No? Well anyway, they
were called mystery circles. So
this guy spread rumors that they were saucer
landing sites, and when others began to disappear, there
was even more talk.
But there were other things than the saucer landing site explanation, such as
the
Naughty Stories, Dragon Scrolls, or Plasma Legend. So there was no real
proof. But real disappearances
did happen.
[The kid slows down.]
KID
Oh, I forgot to mention, the saucer was called 'Shevat'. There are
even people
who worship it.
[The kid stops.]
KID
So, was that of any use? Ahem.
[Elly wanders around and finds a kid sitting on a seesaw.]
KID
Huh? 'Why aren't you playing with them?' Don't be silly...! I can't
play with girls!!
ELLY
"Well then, are you saying I can't play because I'm a girl?"
KID
You're okay!
[The kid stops for a second.]
KID
Hey hey get on this!
[Elly plays with the kid for a few minutes. They head inside. Scene change.]
[Scene opens inside the orphanage's first room. Billy is at a desk, busy, so Elly sneaks around and climbs up the ladder to the attic to find a kid.]
KID
Ah, you scared me. I thought you were Brother B...
It's a secret,
okay?
[Ok]
KID
Ya~ay! Thanks. I'll give you this book if you keep it a secret,
'kay?
[Item sound]
Received a fun picture book!
[Elly sneaks through the north door (quietly, of course!). Scene change.]
[Scene opens on the bedroom area. Elly examines the bathroom door.]
VOICE
Toilet taken!
[Elly climbs up to find a kid on the top bunk.]
KID
Hey, read me this book!
[Alright!]
[The kid jumps.]
KID
Ye~y!!
[The kid takes down a book and hands it to Elly.]
ELLY
"Long, long ago there was a woman named Zephyr.
She wanted to be a
god so she built a tower that reached up to heaven.
Then she built a city at
the top. But god got mad and destroyed her tower.
So she then had to live in
a 'hideout for sinful hermits'.
After that she never returned to the earth
again... The end."
KID
Is there really a 'Hideout for skinful termites'? It sounds scary!
[The kid puts the book back.]
[Another kid is jumping on the lower bunk. Elly goes down to him.]
KID
This bed's so fluffy!! Ya wanna fluff it?
[I wanna fluff]
KID
Go ahead!
[Scene fade.]
[Begin music: "Back to Sleep (1)"]
[Begin music: "The Sky, The Clouds, and You"]
[Scene opens on the same spot. Elly goes into the back room, but nobody is there. She returns to the bathroom door, which was occupied earlier.]
VOICE
Wait a minute.
[A rat kid comes out.]
KID
There wasn't any paper so I used this book. Did you wanna use it?
[Item sound]
Received an 'Old Comic Book'.
[Elly goes into the restroom. Scene change.]
[Scene opens in the restroom. Elly lifts the lid (:P)]
ELLY
"Hey, something's in the toilet."
(But there's no way I'm touching
it)
[Elly heads for the adjoining room. Scene change.]
[Scene opens in the first adjoining room. Primera is wandering about and says 'hello' in her own way.]
PRIMERA
"..."
[Elly goes over to the kid sitting on the bed. A ding like the one that was in the sewers is heard.]
KID
Sounds good, huh? My Dad gave me this bell so I would never get
lost.
But my dad has no sense of direction and gets lost a lot too! So he
also has the same kind of bell.
He went to the 'Ethos' headquarters but never
came back...
He must have gotten lost on the way... He's so silly!
[The bell from the sewers is rung twice. Fade music.]
KID
What? That bell... How did you get that?
Hey, you didn't happen to
meet my dad, did you? Where is he?
RICO
"..."
CITAN
(Oh-no! That wasn't... his father...!?)
RICO
"Listen son! Your father's gone to a faraway place... Here, this is
his bell!"
[The bell dings. The kid turns around.]
KID
My father's a liar!! He said we would go away and live by ourselves...
just the two of us...
I've waited... so long... Oh, Daddy... why?
Boo-hoo-hoo!
PRIMERA
"..."
KID
Sob, sob... But... thanks.
Thanks for bringing Dad's bell back.
It'll cheer me up...!!
[Unmute music. The kid turns around and dings the bell twice.]
KID
As thanks I'll give you my dad's favorite book.
[Item sound]
Received the ''Ethos' Doctrine Book'.
[The kid starts dinging the bells.]
KID
I can cheer myself up!!
[Elly & Co. leave and go back to the first room. Scene change.]
[Scene opens in the front room of the orphanage. The group goes over to Billy.]
BILLY
"Oh, how are you? How is Fei doing?"
ELLY
"Very well.
He hasn't regained consciousness yet, but he should
come around soon."
BILLY
"Really? That's good to hear."
ELLY
"Um, Billy. I don't know quite how to thank you for helping Fei."
BILLY
"Don't mention it.
We may believe in different gods, but none of
us can leave people in need."
ELLY
"Thank you very much. By the way is this your orphanage...?"
BILLY
"Surprised there are only children?"
[Billy turns around.]
BILLY
"My sister and I haven't had parents since we were infants...
So
I opened an orphanage so kids without anyone wouldn't have to go through what we
did."
[Billy turns back to Elly.]
BILLY
"They're all healthy and obedient to the teachings of the
'Ethos'.
They're all good kids who even help me with work."
[The front door opens. Camera pan around to behind Billy as Sigurd enters.]
SIGURD
"Hyuga! Yggdrasil's radar picked up an image of a huge ship!!"
[The three adventurers walk over to Sigurd. Camera pan 180 and descend to Sigurd's side.]
CITAN
"Gebler again?"
[Sigurd turns to Citan.]
SIGURD
"I don't know but it's moving at 10 repsol/hr to the
south.
Let's head to the bridge."
CITAN
"Understood. I will be there shortly."
[Jessie walks in the back door, getting everybody's attention.]
JESSIE
Hey you, in the black and white. Are you Sigurd?
SIGURD
"Is that any way to speak to someone? Who do you think you
are?"
[Citan turns to Sigurd.]
CITAN
"Ah... He may not look it but he is our senior."
SIGURD
"Senior? Jessie?"
[Billy walks over to the edge of the desk and turns to Jessie.]
BILLY
"Siggy?"
JESSIE
"A silver haired man with amber skin. I'd say that's rare.
What
are you all doing here?"
CITAN
"It just sort of happened."
SIGURD
"A lot's happened..."
[Jessie walks around the table to Sigurd.]
JESSIE
"Well, let's talk about things over some drinks.
So... Why are
you all here?"
[Billy speaks, getting everyone's attention except Jessie and Sigurd.]
BILLY
"Siggy, it's been a long time... What's with the eye patch?"
[Sigurd turns to Billy.]
SIGURD
"Billy... you've grown up.
With that smile you look just like
Racquel."
JESSIE
"Well... then, shall we go straight off and drink ourselves
under?"
[Sigurd turns to Jessie.]
SIGURD
"Where do you plan on going...?"
JESSIE
"What do you mean? There has to be a bar or two on board your
ship!"
[Sigurd turns around.]
SIGURD
"I have a slight headache..."
JESSIE
"What? That's OK.
We'll get rid of that headache with a good
drink."
[Jessie leaves via the front door. Citan turns to Sigurd.]
CITAN
"What are you going to do?"
[Sigurd looks after Jessie.]
SIGURD
"I can't just say no to him..."
JESSIE
"What are you doin'? Let's go!"
SIGURD
"Hey now..."
JESSIE
Oh-no-ho-ho...
[Sigurd leaves. Citan follows him.]
BILLY
"I'm not going... Go ahead and have a good time."
[Billy walks to the back and leaves via the back door. Elly and Rico watch.]
ELLY
"What is this huge ship Sig was talking about?"
[Scene fade. Black screen.]
CITAN
"I am sorry, everyone. If I may be excused..."
BART
"Oh well, me too."
[Scene reopens. Bart has replaced Citan. Elly and her friends head for the back room. Scene change.]
[Scene opens on the back room. Nobody's there. Elly, on a whim, goes and examines the bookshelf. Camera pans to behind Elly on the side and back halfway. The bookshelf opens to reveal Billy standing behind it.]
BILLY
!!
[Billy walks out.]
BILLY
"What do you need?"
[Billy walks past Elly to the door and turns back.]
BILLY
"Excuse me, I must go and greet some people.
Please don't go
searching through other's rooms."
[Billy leaves. Scene change.]
[Scene opens on the front of the orphanage. Camera pan down slowly as an 'Ethos' bishop walks in from the south and stops just past the entrance. Camera stop when bishop stops. A kid sees him.]
KID
!!
[The kid jumps.]
KID
Wow!! Uncle Stone!!
[The kids all run up to "Uncle Stone". Camera pan in closer.]
UNCLE STONE
"Hello, are you all happy?"
[The kids jump as they answer.]
KIDS
Yeah!!
Yes!
Of course!!
Yeah!!
[Camera rotate slowly around Stone to the back. The front door is heard opening. Camera pan up to the door as Billy and Primera walk out. Billy stops at the stair bottom while Primera stays on the top step.]
BILLY
Bishop Stone!!
BISHOP STONE
"Oh, Billy my son!"
[Billy walks up to a few feet in front of Bishop Stone. Elly, Bart and Rico walk out of the door past Primera and stop behind Billy.]
BILLY
"Sorry to bother you when you're busy."
PRIMERA
...
[Primera walks back into the orphanage and leaves.]
BISHOP STONE
"And who are these people?"
[Billy turns to Elly's group.]
BILLY
"They are travelers from another country."
BISHOP STONE
"Oh... By the way, about your earlier message..."
[Billy turns back to Bishop Stone.]
BILLY
"Yes, about work..."
BISHOP STONE
"Yes.
The 'Ethos' transport ship that went missing finally
turned up. But, there's no reply..."
BILLY
"What does it mean?"
BISHOP STONE
"Hmmm, perhaps Reapers again.
Billy can you do the
usual?"
BILLY
"Right, no problem. Leave it to me, Bishop."
BISHOP STONE
"Thanks. It's to the northeast from here.
Please be
careful. It's a dangerous area.
There are some pretty fast sea currents and
it's best to stay away from the Salvagers.
You'd better go in a big
ship..."
BART
"Hey, is that the massive ship Sig was talking about earlier?"
[Billy turns to Bart.]
BILLY
"I don't know if that was it or not."
BART
"From what I hear, it's a place where the currents are really
fast.
It's supposedly very dangerous for small ships. But the Yggdrasil will
be safe there.
No matter how big the wave or swell, it's no problem. Besides,
we have help from Fei.
Let's get aboard. I'll see you off to there. What, we
could even help you finish your job!"
ELLY
"I agree. You saved Fei. It's the least we could do."
BILLY
"Thanks but this doesn't involve you. Just me is enough."
ELLY
"But isn't that place dangerous?
If there is anything we can do to
help..."
BILLY
"I don't want to get you involved..."
BISHOP STONE
"Billy, my son, don't waste their good intentions. That sub
is theirs, no?
Why don't you cooperate with them..."
[Billy turns to Bishop Stone.]
BILLY
"... But, Bishop!"
[Bart turns to Billy and raises his elbow.]
BART
"Yeah, it's no fun to travel alone. Let's help."
[Billy turns around. Elly nods.]
ELLY
"Billy, it's best to go with friends!"
[Bart drops his arms.]
BILLY
"...
Well if you insist. Thank you. I appreciate it."
BISHOP STONE
"I thank you deeply. Billy, take care of these
people.
Report back to headquarters after you get back."
[Billy turns to Bishop Stone.]
BILLY
"Yes, Bishop."
[Bishop Stone leaves. The kids watch him go. Billy turns to Elly's group.]
BILLY
"Thank you. Let's see what tomorrow brings.
I'll come as soon as
I'm finished preparing for tomorrow. Go on ahead.
I'll tell you more on the
way there..."
[The kids scatter. Billy walks back into the orphanage. Elly and her friends leave to the Yggdrasil. Scene change. Stop music.]
[Begin music: "Leftovers of the Dreams of the Strong" - skip intro]
[Scene opens outside the bridge. Elly stops everyone.]
ELLY
"They can't launch the Yggdrasil cause Sigurd isn't there...
He
must be in the Gun Room or somewhere."
[Elly & Co. head for (you guessed it) the Gun Room. Scene change.]
[Scene opens on the Gun Room. Scene cut to the far corner near Maison's desk. Jessie is looking around with Citan and Sigurd looking on. Jessie turns to Sigurd.]
JESSIE
"I see. This is the place you begged to return to, eh?"
[Sigurd turns to Jessie.]
SIGURD
"Well, yes..."
[Jessie turns around.]
JESSIE
"After you left, Billy cried a lot."
SIGURD
"... I'm sorry."
[Citan turns to Jessie.]
CITAN
"When you left Solaris, the same thing happened. Kahr was quite
upset then."
SIGURD
"I didn't mean to betray him..."
CITAN
"His misanthropy has gotten even worse because of that."
[Citan turns to Jessie.]
CITAN
"Now, enough about old times, old friend.
I did not expect to
find you loitering in this land..."
[Citan turns to the group at the door.]
CITAN
Everyone!
[Elly and the group walk up. Jessie is walking around laughing. Elly walks to everyone.]
JESSIE
"Ha, ha, ha!! I haven't hit the booze for a long while!
It's all
cause my son doesn't let me drink! This is a great bar you've got here... old
codger!"
MAISON
"Why... errh, thank you, my good man."
[Jessie laughs.]
JESSIE
"This old codger, has good character... like his booze! I like
him!! Ha, ha, ha!"
CITAN
"No one can stop our old friend now...!"
[Elly goes to Maison.]
MAISON
"A mature yet modern atmosphere... That is what I offer you...
A
bartender's life isn't all that bad you know!"
[Maison stops.]
MAISON
"How may I be of service?"
[Elly buys stuff.]
MAISON
"I hope I can be of such service again!"
SIGURD
"... Oh, yes... It's time for you to depart, right.
I'm sorry,
old friend, but I have a job I must do..."
[Sigurd turns to Jessie.]
JESSIE
"Oh god, is it that time already? Well then, before we go let's do
the usual...
You know... the 'paint the face on your stomach and dance around
trick'...? The three of us together!"
[Citan turns to Jessie.]
CITAN
"!! Well, actually, we are in a hurry so, errh...
We will talk
about that some other time..."
[Jessie turns to Citan.]
JESSIE
"Oh? Is that right? Well then, I oughta get outta here too,
huh!"
[Jessie starts leaving. Citan stops him by talking.]
CITAN
"There is something I want to ask you too...
So let us get
together when we have more time...!"
[Jessie turns and pulls out his shotgun.]
JESSIE
"Yeah. I hope I live to have the opportunity..."
[Jessie leaves.]
CITAN
"..."
[Scene fade. Black screen.]
NOISE
CRASH!!!
ELLY
"AAAAAAHHHHH!! Sigurd is...!"
CITAN
"Again!? Sigurd gets drunk so easily...!
Well that blows it! We
cannot leave today, perhaps tomorrow..."
[Stop music.]
