Chapter 39: Raid of Shevat

[Begin music: "Forest of the Black Moon"]
[Scene opens at the top of Zephyr's chamber at the entrance. Pan down and over to the throne area to reveal that clockwise, Zephyr, Billy, Jessie, Rico, Maria, Fei, Chu-Chu, Elly, Bart and Citan have all arrived. Camera pan to behind Fei in front of Zephyr. ]
CITAN
"The Solaris Gear units are on a high speed...
... interception
course with Shevat.
It would be reasonable to believe that their main targets
are going to be the 4 Gate generators.
They are probably planning on
finishing us off since Dominia's demolition has weakened the Gate output.
We
have scrambled our interceptor units, but I do not know how they will
fare...
The people of Shevat are not accustomed to Gear tactics.
I want to
avoid unnecessary sacrifices if at all possible."
[Fei nods.]
FEI
"Yeah... I know, doc. We'll go!
We're already involved. And, we
can't just stand by and watch these people die."
ZEPHYR
"Fei..."
[Bart nods.]
BART
"I don't like the idea of working for free...
... but I don't like
the idea of turning tail and running from them even more!
Let's do it! It
doesn't matter who they are. I'll take 'em all down in my Brigandier!!"
[Elly nods.]
ELLY
"Yes...! We'll do what we can to protect the people here!"
[Rico shakes his head.]
RICO
"Tch. Since the day I met you all, there's been nothing but
trouble...
But I've come this far with you all. I guess there's no point in
bitching about it.
I'll show them what happens when they tick the great Rico
off."
[Billy nods.]
BILLY
"I will go too! The enemy was able to get in because they let the
Yggdrasil in.
We can't allow the people of this country to be in danger
because of us..."
[Jessie brandishes his shotgun onto his shoulder.]
JESSIE
"Yeah, right on! Go for it young 'uns! We're depending on
you.
Especially since my life also depends on it. I have no intentions of
kickin' the bucket here."
[Billy turns to Jessie.]
BILLY
"Shut up! Dad, could you not say anything!?"
[Jessie sheathes his shotgun.]
JESSIE
"Alright alright, I know."
[Jessie turns to the back wall. Billy turns back to the group.]
JESSIE
"Why can't you be more nicer?"
[Chu-Chu bounces.]
CHU-CHU
"Alright! Chu-Chu's going chu help too!"
[Fei turns to Chu-Chu and looks down with his hands on his hips.]
FEI
"...? Going chu help...?
Chu-Chu, what're you doing here?"
[Elly turns to Chu-Chu and looks down, then folds her arms.]
ELLY
"Well... In all the bustle, she somehow tagged along."
FEI
"What am I gonna do... This isn't a game.
It's dangerous, so go
back to the Yggdrasil. Okay, Chu-Chu? Be a good girl."
[Chu-Chu turns to Fei and shakes her head.]
CHU-CHU
"Uh hmm... Chu-Chu's not a good girl. I'm in that dangerous age
right now."
[Chu-Chu nods.]
CHU-CHU
"And Chu-Chu can help chu!
I'm going with all of you. Yeah?
Yeah?"
[Fei nods and looks up.]
FEI
"Tch, alright... Don't come crying to me when things get outta
hand."
[Maria turns to Chu-Chu.]
MARIA
"Heh, so they call you Chu-Chu also.
Many of your friends live in
this city. You want to go meet them later?"
[Chu-Chu turns to Maria.]
CHU-CHU
"R, really? They're all here?
Yaaay! I finally found them!!
Chu-Chu's friends. They're here!!"
[Chu-Chu bounces and then turns to Zephyr.]
CHU-CHU
"Now, let's put everything into it.
Everyone, we have chu give
it our best shot!"
[Everyone turns back to the center. Citan looks down thinking.]
CITAN
"Here is the breakdown of the enemy Gear units...
As I have
explained before, 4 separate units are each headed for their respective
generators.
From the information collected in Shevat...
... we have a good
idea of the capabilities and composition of the Gear units...
However, there
is one giant Gear that they are holding back that we have no information
about."
[Citan turns to the side. Jessie looks behind them and then towards the center.]
JESSIE
"An unidentified giant Gear...? It can't be..."
ZEPHYR
"Allow me to put it on screen."
[Scene change. Stop music.]
[Scene re-opens, but the wall is projecting the image of a huge red Gear behind Jessie. The group looks towards the "screen." Camera pan up to reveal a huge red Gear with a design similar to that of Seibzehn.]
MARIA
"Th, this is..."
[Scene cut to in front of the red Gear on screen.]
MARIA
"Achtzehn...!?"
[Scene cut to behind the Gear screen looking back at the throne platform.]
BART
"What's with that creepy Gear...?
Do you know anything,
Maria?"
MARIA
"Achtzehn... is the 2nd Gear my father designed...
Seibzehn's
sister Gear. But Achtzehn wasn't completed...!
Other than Seibzehn, father
didn't make anymore, he was supposed to have burned the plans...!
So...
Why...!?"
VOICE FROM ACHTZEHN
People of Shevat! Hear me!
[Maria shakes her head.]
[Begin music: "Tears of the Stars, Hearts of the People"]
MARIA
"That voice... No... Father!?"
[Scene cut to behind Bart. Pan and rotate up to reveal the Gear on screen from a different angle.]
NIKOLAI
"I'd heard some interesting rats had run into there...
Just in
time to test out Achtzehn. I can take you and Shevat out all at once!
Hello,
little rats, come on out. Come on my cute little guinea pigs."
MARIA
"Why that...!! Why is father...!?"
ZEPHYR
"Calm down, Maria!!
It doesn't mean that Dr. Nikolai is
inside!"
[Maria shakes her head. Camera pan to behind Maria.]
MARIA
"But...!! But... Father's voice...!?"
ZEPHYR
"Maria!! Get a hold of yourself!
You intend to lose even before
you fight...? Against the very people who made you suffer?"
[Maria shifts slightly.]
MARIA
"...!! But..."
[Citan turns towards Maria.]
CITAN
"Well, that is fine. Let us consider our next move!"
[The group turns back to Citan. Citan looks down.]
CITAN
"We must repulse the Gear forces and protect the generators."
[Citan assumes his thinking stance.]
CITAN
"To do that, let us split into four teams, and intercept the
enemy.
The four of us will attack independently and defend each generator to
the death. The other two, wait here.
It is dangerous... but we cannot turn
back now. If even one generator falls it is a defeat for us."
[Citan looks up.]
ZEPHYR
"Maria... You, wait here."
CITAN
"... Please, Maria."
[Maria turns to Zephyr and Citan and nods very slowly.]
MARIA
"... Okay... I understand."
[Citan turns towards camera and resumes his thinking stance.]
CITAN
"Next, the formation of the enemy Gear forces.
At Generator 1,
there are two small Gears and a complement of Solaris troops...
If you do not
hit them fast and hard you will get bogged down in a firefight.
At Generator
2, there are 3 White Knights. They are very fast and maneuverable.
At
Generator 3 there is a large Gear and a White Knight.
Be careful, the large
Gear has some kind of special attack.
At Generator 4, there is a large Gear
and a White Knight.
The large Gear seems to be a power Gear."
[Citan stops.]
CITAN
"So, who will go to Generator 1?"
[Elly.]
CITAN
"Who will go to Generator 2?"
[Billy.]
CITAN
"Who will go to Generator 3?"
[Bart.]
CITAN
"Who will go to Generator 4?"
[Rico.]
CITAN
"Understood. The target assignments are..."
Generator 1:

CITAN
"Are these assignments OK?"
[Let me get ready.]
CITAN
"When you are ready, we will leave for the battle...
Please
hurry, now! The enemy is almost there!"
[Fei turns to Citan and nods.]
FEI
"Got it! We've come this far, we're not gonna get beaten now!"
[Camera pan up to Achtzehn. Scene fade. Stop music.]
[Begin music: "Forest of the Black Moon"]
[Scene opens on the hallway outside the Queen's room. Fei heads for the guest room. Scene change.]
[Scene opens on the guest room. Margie is in there. Fei walks up to her.]
MARGIE
"Heh heh, I came here, too!
The inside of the Yggdrasil smells
like a men's locker room. I can't stand it anymore."
[Fei takes care of preparations and returns to the Queen's room. Scene change.]
[Scene opens on the back-screen setup in Zephyr's room with everyone again.]
CITAN
"Well, the enemy is almost there!
Are you ready now?"
[I'm
ready, let's go!]
[Citan nods.]
CITAN
"Well, alright then...
Those defending the generators, should now
depart in their Gears!"
ZEPHYR
"Everyone, please. Be careful."
[Camera pan up to Achtzehn. Scene change. Stop music.]
[Begin music: "Knight of Fire"]
[Scene opens outside Shevat. Camera pan up and over to the center to reveal Vierge, Renmazuo, Brigandier and Stier stationed clockwise at four corners.]
NOTICE
Which mission will you do?
[The Generator 1.]
NOTICE
Want to check your equipment?
[Yes.]
ELLY
"I don't have anything against you, but I can't turn back now!"
[Battle: Vierge vs. Solaris Guard x6/Littlefoot x2]
[Scene re-opens.]
NOTICE

BILLY
"Rest in peace, agents of evil. May all of you turn to dust."
[Battle: Renmazuo vs. White Knight x3]
[Scene re-opens.]

"Come on! Who's gonna be first?
There's no way a pathetic unit
like yours could ever beat the likes of me!!"

[Scene re-opens.]

NOTICE

RICO
"Hmph! I'll take you all down at once!!"
[Battle: Stier vs. Avalanche/White Knight x2]
[Scene re-opens.]
FEI
"We did it! All four Gate Generators are safe!"
[Camera pan in and up to the Palace tower. Scene change.]
[Scene opens on the Queen's platform. The screen displaying Achtzehn is still operational. Fei, Maria and Chu-Chu stand in front of Citan and Zephyr. Jessie is off to the opposite side.]
JESSIE
"Okay, it's ready. So, the last one is... this."
[Jessie turns to the screen behind him. Camera pan up to in front of Achtzehn.]
JESSIE
"What's Achtzehn gonna do next?"
[Scene pan quickly to behind Maria as the screen reveals a strange white Gear. Pan around the screen as it flies up to Achtzehn. An attacking commotion is heard. Flash screen black. Flash back in to reveal a Gear wielding a spear standing in front of Achtzehn. Pan back to behind Fei's group, who has turned to look.]
JESSIE
"Shevat's Gear forces...!!"
[Camera pan in to directly behind the Shevat Gear.]
JESSIE
"Beat it! This isn't an opponent for you!!"
[Acthzehn rears its arm back, hovers back a step and then trains its left arm cannon on the Gear.]
MARIA
"Stop it...!!"
[Achtzehn blows the Gear away. Flash black. Mute music. Flash black in behind Maria as the entire screen goes black from the smoke. The screen eventually clears of smoke. Achtzehn is still there, but the Gear isn't. Unmute music.]
JESSIE
"Damn it...! I'm gonna mess you up!"
MARIA
"Why...? Why this...?"
[Achtzehn turns towards the group on the screen and pulls its arm down while its other goes behind it.]
NIKOLAI
"So you can be test subjects for this guy."
[Achtzehn shifts and brings its arms out to its sides partially. An array of red particle beams shoot out of it in all directions, tainting the scene red.]
MARIA
"Waghhh!"
JESSIE
"Umph...!!"
[Scene returns to normal as the shot stops. Citan shakes his head.]
CITAN
"What was that...!?"
NIKOLAI
"Achtzehn's new weapon... the anti-Gear Psycho Jammer!"
[Scene cut to below the front of Fei and pan back to behind Achtzehn, at a distance.]
BART
"Brigandier won't move...!?"
ELLY
"Vierge isn't responding either!"
BILLY
"This one's no good either...!!"
RICO
"Is this his doing?"
CITAN
"Powerful electrical waves are interfering with the Gears' response
circuits.
Don't worry, it will soon pass. But..."
[Scene cut to directly in front of Achtzehn, below its head.]
NIKOLAI
"That much time is enough to erase you from the face of the
earth."
[A short pause.]
NIKOLAI
"Humans are an imperfect, foolish life form...
I will show the
greatness of a perfect life form!
Achtzehn, the combination of human wisdom
and the strength of steel."
[Fade music.]
FEI
"Crap!! At this rate, I can't do anything!"
[Scene cut to behind Fei, who's looking down with his hands on his hips. Citan turns towards him and looks down.]
CITAN
"That is not what I mean. What if... If Seibzehn..."
[Fei turns to the side, still looking down.]
[Begin music: "Gathering Stars in the Night Sky"]
[Camera pan slowly over to behind Maria.]
MARIA
"...!!"
[Maria turns to her right side.]
CITAN
"If Seibzehn is Achtzehn's sister Gear... then maybe... just
maybe...
... What I am saying is that it would not be surprising if it is
equipped with an anti-jamming shield."
ZEPHYR
"... Listen, Maria...
If the other Gears become immobile, you
and Seibzehn are the only hope.
You're full of spirit... You can decide what
to do yourself."
[Jessie turns to Maria.]
JESSIE
"More than that... I don't wanna say it but...
Your father is no
longer in there..."
[Maria turns to Jessie.]
MARIA
"Stop it!! You wouldn't know!!"
[Maria turns back.]
MARIA
"Even though, it may be, I... to me..."
[Jessie turns towards Zephyr, then back to Maria, brandishing his shotgun.]
JESSIE
"I see... oh well... Might as well expect the worst then."
[Maria looks down.]
MARIA
"... I'm sorry..."
[Chu-Chu turns to Maria and nods.]
CHU-CHU
"I'm going."
[Citan looks up. Maria turns around.]
MARIA
"...!? What are you saying, Chu-Chu!?"
[Camera pan slowly over to Chu-Chu.]
CHU-CHU
"So... please let me go along."
[Chu-Chu nods.]
CHU-CHU
"No problem. The gods will look after us.
Let's go."
[Chu-Chu rolls up and hops off screen under camera. Scene cut to behind Zephyr's throne. Chu-Chu rolls through the entrance door.]
MARIA
"Chu-Chu...!?"
[Maria turns to Fei and looks down for a second, then up again.]
MARIA
"... ..."
[Maria runs through the door after Chu-Chu. Camera pan up. Stop music. Scene change.]
[Scene opens on top of the palace tower at the entrance. Maria is running up the steps. Camera pan with her. She stops at the top and looks at both sides. Achtzehn's feet are seen hovering close to the tower. Camera pan up to the very top of the bell tower behind Chu-Chu, who's on top of it. She is directly in front of Achtzehn!]
MARIA
"No Chu-Chu! Don't!"
[Chu-Chu turns slightly towards Maria.]
CHU-CHU
"Leave it up chu me, Maria. No sweat!"
[Camera pan back to full shot of Achtzehn.]
NIKOLAI
"What's with this astronomically unintellectual...
looking low
level animal...?"
[Scene cut to behind Achtzehn.]
CHU-CHU
"Don't chu be rude to me. I'm not a low level animal. I'm
Chu-Chu."
[Begin music: "Flight"]
[Scene cut to below Chu-Chu on the front side. Camera pan in close to in front of Chu-Chu.]
CHU-CHU
"Well, let's get ready chu rumble, you bad boy!
Get your butt
ready chu be kicked across the other end of the horizon!!"
[Chu-Chu flares up in a flaming aura. Scene cut to behind Chu-Chu at a distance. She is enveloped in bluish white light. After a few seconds, she begins to grow up and out. The light becomes almost blinding. She reaches a size similar to a Gear!! Scene cut to in front of Chu-Chu. Camera pan in closer.]
[----Battle mode----]
[Scene opens in front of Chu-Chu. She hops a step, making a small shudder as she jumps and squeals.]
CHU-CHU
"Kyow! I did it! I did the big big churansformation!"
[Chu-Chu screams "Yay!" and jumps a step.]
[Battle: Chu-Chu vs. Achtzehn]
[After three exchanges in which Achtzehn is damaged but Chu-Chu takes none, scene cut to behind Achtzehn.]
NIKOLAI
"For a low-class, low level life-form, you're pretty good."
CHU-CHU
"I'm not a low level life-form. I'm Chu-Chu.
Don't be a bad
loser! If you wanchu apologize, you had better do it while you still can."
[Scene cut to in front of Achtzehn.]
NIKOLAI
"Die, you pathetic animal! Die!"
[Achtzehn lifts its right arm cannon and trains it on Chu-Chu. It gathers its power quickly and fires. Scene cut to in front of Chu-Chu. She winces from the blast and falls on her seat.]
CHU-CHU
"Ouchu! That hurt..."
[Chu-Chu mutters.]
[Scene fade slow.]
[Tally earnings.]
[----End battle mode----]
[Stop music.]
[Scene opens in front of Achtzehn at a distance behind the bell tower. Chu-Chu is still reeling in the foreground behind the tower. Maria runs into the tower.]
MARIA
"Chu-Chu!!"
NIKOLAI
"I see... you're a giant native lifeform of this
planet...
You're not... a young rankar.
Species name, dotesqueChu-Chupolin
(intellect, astronomically low)!
They still haven't gone extinct yet?
But,
through genetic engineering, they're supposed to have been minimized in
size...
Probably one of the survivors that had their Limiters removed by the
wisemen from Shevat.
Intriguing... You'd make an excellent guinea pig. I'll
use you for many experiments!"
VOICE
Big sister Maria...
[Maria turns around. Camera pan over and down a few feet to see Midori.]
MARIA
"Midori!?"
[Maria walks over to Midori.]
MARIA
"No, you shouldn't be here!! It's dangerous here so stay in..."
MIDORI
"Calling... Your father..."
[Maria looks down for a second and then looks up.]
MARIA
"What...?"
[Maria turns and looks at Achtzehn. Camera pan up a couple feet.]
MARIA
"..."
[Midori turns towards Achtzehn.]
MIDORI
"Uh uh... No...
It's not... that scary thing over there."
[Fade all sounds.]
MARIA
"...!!"
[Maria turns around to Midori and nods.]
[Begin music: "Flight"]
MARIA
"Seibzehn!!"
[Camera pan away from the two. Scene change.]
[Scene opens on the Queen's hall steps. Maria runs down them. Camera pan with her and turn as she reaches the door. Scene change.]
[Scene opens on the elevator shaft, looking up. Pan down as the elevator passes with Maria on it. Scene change.]
[Scene opens in the hallway adjoining the dock entrance with the number 17 hangar bay. Camera behind Maria as she runs down it. She opens the door. Scene change.]
[Scene opens in the green-tinted hangar 17 bay. Camera above Maria at a distance as she walks in and stops.]
MARIA
"Seibzehn!!"
[Camera pan up quickly and zoom into Seibzehn's head.]
MARIA
"I'm sorry, I'm late...
Let's go! Solaris'... Solaris'... enemy
is awaiting!!"
[Scene cut to above the personnel dock in front of Seibzehn. Mute music. A rumble is heard. Camera pan back to above Seibzehn as the dock door underneath it opens. Maria is standing on top of Seibzehn. Scene cut to a light that turns from red to green. Unmute music. Scene cut to in front of Maria. Zoom in closer.]
MARIA
"Seibzehn, sally forth!!"
[Seibzehn shifts. Scene cut to above Seibzehn looking down. Seibzehn descends through the dock entrance. Scene change.]
[Scene opens at entrance chute. Camera looks in as Seibzehn descends out of it, feet first. Seibzehn and Maria pass camera as it pans to look down. Scene change.]
[Scene opens on another portion of the chute. Seibzehn flies past camera quickly. Camera pan down to reveal the exit as Seibzehn enters the sky. Scene change.]
[Scene opens on top of Seibzehn on Maria's side at a short distance. Camera pan to behind Maria, looking out at Achtzehn.]
NIKOLAI
"Seibzehn!! Is that Maria?"
MARIA
"... It's true that I'm Maria Balthasar.
But, you... who are
you...?"
NIKOLAI
"Of course it's me, Nikolai!
Look at this, Maria. The results
of my research!"
[Scene cut to directly in front of Achtzehn.]
NIKOLAI
"This huge, powerful, forever shining body!
There'll be no
aging and death. I was reborn as a new breed."
[Scene cut to the opposite side of Maria. Pan in closer to Seibzehn's head slowly.]
MARIA
"... I loved my father in those days when he was human...
His
warm smile... I wanted him to be by my side forever!!"
[Scene cut to behind Seibzehn's side.]
NIKOLAI
"Maria, you're my daughter. You know how stupid humans can
be.
You don't need to perish along with these feeble humans. Now, come,
Maria. Start a new life with me.
We shall begin a new Chapter in life. Let's
build a bright future together.
I'll be by your side and protect you this
time for sure. I promise you."
MARIA
"... Father..."
[Seibzehn rears back its right arm suddenly. Scene cut to in front of Maria at a long distance.]
MARIA
"...!! Seibzehn...!?"
[Scene cut to behind Achtzehn.]
NIKOLAI
"Seibzehn... What? You dare stand against me, your creator?"
[Scene cut to in front of Seibzehn's side as it begins to rumble. Pan in close to under Seibzehn's head.]
MARIA
"T... this is...!! Seibzehn!?"
[Scene cut to behind Seibzehn. Pan up to full shot of Achtzehn.]
NIKOLAI
"Interesting... I'll take you on.
I'll show you how great
Nikolai is, and the power of the Achtzehn. Come on, Seibzehn!!"
[----Battle mode----]
[Scene opens in front of Maria. Camera pan back to behind Achtzehn quickly. Maria begins yelling fast.]
MARIA
"... Achtzehn! I will defeat you!! Seibzehn, let's go!!"
[Battle: Seibzehn vs. Achtzehn]
[After several exchanges. Nikolai speaks on a transmission from Achtzehn to Seibzehn. The transmission shows a brown-haired, kind-looking man.]
NIKOLAI
"Maria... can you hear me?
I'm going to release your Graviton
Cannon from its seal by remote control!
Use that to defeat me."
MARIA
"!! Father! Have you come to your senses!?
No! I can't do
it!!
The Graviton Cannon... you yourself had it sealed up because of its
destructive power.
Father, if I use that on you..."
NIKOLAI
"Fire!! It doesn't matter... I, Nikolai, no longer
exist...
Before I was brainwashed by Solaris, I implanted a conscience
circuit in Achtzehn...
This would respond and activate in the presence of
Seibzehn. My message is coming from there.
And, during the battle, I
transferred all my data from there to Seibzehn.
I may have lost my body, but
my spirit is with Seibzehn, no, with you, Maria. Now and forever!"
MARIA
"... I can't. I can't bring myself to do it!!
Huh! Seibzehn!
Don't... I can't control you! Father, are you doing this!?
Please, don't make
him shoot!!"
[Scene cut to in front of Seibzehn. Seibzehn shifts and rears back. A circular area in its chest begins to flash and then everything flashes white for a split second. Scene cut to the side of Seibzehn as it pins the sparks on to Achtzehn. Achtzehn is enveloped in a yellow spherical explosion, making it shrink. It then regains size. Achtzehn turns slightly. Camera pan in. Achtzehn falls over and explodes, and then vaporizes. Camera pan quickly to in front of Maria.]
MARIA
"... Faaaaaatheeerrr!!"
[Camera pan back away from Seibzehn.]
NIKOLAI'S VOICE
"Maria... I will always be with you. Now and
forever..."
[Scene fade slowly.]
[Tally earnings.]
[----End battle mode----]
[Stop music.]
[Scene opens in front of Maria on the side.]
MARIA
"... Father..."
[Camera pan up and turn back towards Seibzehn. Pan back to a large distance. Scene change.]

[Begin music: "Shevat, the Wind is Calling"]
[Scene opens in Zephyr's chamber. Everyone has reconvened.]
ZEPHYR
"Thank you, everyone.
The generator is repaired and the gate is
developing as usual.
And Maria... You did very well. It is very regretful
about Dr. Nikolai...
Solaris put the doctor through all of that.
We must
defeat them as soon as possible and restore freedom!"
[Maria nods.]
MARIA
"... Yes."
[Fei looks down and puts his hands on his hips.]
FEI
"Queen Zephyr, we will also fight to bring down Solaris.
To begin
with, where is Solaris? How do you get there?"
ZEPHYR
"Solaris is hidden from human eyes by three gates.
One of the
gates is under the 'Ethos' H.Q. but... it is unreachable, even with Gears.
I
don't know where the other two are yet.
Until we destroy the 3 gates, the
path to Solaris will not open.
In addition, we've received some disturbing
