Chapter 45: Escape Solaris

[Begin music: "The Treasure that Cannot be Stolen"]

[Scene opens on a hatch outside a huge techno-looking fence. Fei and Elly hop out of the hatch. They walk over to a gate in the fence. Elly walks back a couple steps. Camera behind Elly as Fei turns to her.]

FEI
"Where are we?"

ELLY
"The 1st Class citizen level.
This is where the Solaris people called Gazel live. Follow me."

[Elly opens the gate and walks in a few steps. Fei turns towards her. After a few feet, she stops and turns back to Fei.]

FEI
"W... wait.
The guard robot may get you again if you go in there..."

ELLY
"Don't worry. This is my house."

FEI
"Y... your house? This big house is yours?"

[Camera pan up to reveal a huge luxurious-looking one-floor stone house with a large courtyard in front. Camera pan back down.]

ELLY
"Yep. Come on in."

[Fei walks up to Elly. They walk in the house. Scene change.]

[Scene opens in the foyer. Camera behind Elly on the side as Fei and her enter. A middle-aged, blond-haired, blue-eyed woman is standing on the stairs at the other end.]

WOMAN
!!

[The woman turns to see the visitors.]

WOMAN
Elly!? Elly, is that you?

[The woman runs down the stairs. Elly runs up a couple feet.]

ELLY
Mother!

[Elly's mother walks up a step, a bit slower.]

ELLY'S MOTHER MEDENA
"You... I'm glad... you're okay..."

[Medena turns around. Camera pan to Medena on the side at a distance.]

MEDENA
"The military told me you were missing in action..."

[Elly shakes her head.]

ELLY
"No, mother, that's not true. See, I'm alive!"

[Elly looks to the side and then back at Medena.]

ELLY
"Mother, where is father?"

[Medena turns to Elly.]

MEDENA
"He's still at the palace. I think he'll be back soon..."

[Elly looks down.]

ELLY
"I see..."

[Medena turns to Fei.]

MEDENA
"Elly, who's this?"

[Elly looks up.]

ELLY
"What? Ah... Um, he's from the Special Forces,
the same as me. He was only recently promoted from 3rd Class citizen.
It's because of him I was able to return."

[Elly turns to Fei.]

ELLY
Right, Fei?

[Fei turns to Elly then back to Medena.]

FEI
"What? Um... no... I mean..."

MEDENA
"I see. That must be why he's dressed like a land dweller.
But, why isn't he wearing a Special Forces uniform like you, Elly?"

[Elly turns to Medena.]

ELLY
"S, sorry mother. There's a report I must turn in right away, so..."

[Elly turns to Fei.]

ELLY
"Fei, come with me."

[Elly walks up the stairs behind Medena. Pan over to the left. Fei follows her. Elly reaches the top of the first set and then walks back towards camera, climbing to the balcony. Fei stops and looks at Medena at the top of the first set and then follows Elly. A door is heard opening when she gets to the top left from camera. Medena watches them go. Scene change.]

[Scene opens in a spacious, nicely tiled room. There isn't much in the way of decoration, but a huge cylinder-shaped object is behind them. Camera above and behind Fei in front of Elly.]

ELLY
"This is my room..."

[Elly turns around towards the cylinder object.]

ELLY
"Ahh, I can finally relax."

[Fei looks to the left and then the right, then back to Elly.]

FEI
"This place is huge! It must be bigger than the village chief's!"

[Elly turns back to Fei.]

ELLY
"Heh.
I'm sweaty after running, so I'm taking a shower."

[Elly walks around the side of the cylinder behind an obstruction and reappears inside the cylinder area. Fei walks up to the glass.]

FEI
"You have a bathroom in your room?"

ELLY
"It's pretty normal."

FEI
... (It's not normal...)

ELLY
"When are you going to stop staring?"

[Fei jumps and turns around. Elly turns around also and the cylinder is obscured by light. As the light obscures the chamber, Elly removes her clothes and turns the water on.]

FEI
"Hey, Elly, was that your mother?"

ELLY
"Yes."

FEI
"Oh. She sure is a pretty lady."

ELLY
"... Yes, she is."

FEI
"But you don't look much like her.
Do you resemble your father?"

[The water turns off. Stop music.]

[Begin music: "Lost and Broken Heart"]

ELLY
"Haven't you noticed yet?"

FEI
"What do you mean?"

[Camera pan away and rotate around to behind Fei on the side at a distance.]

ELLY
"The color of my skin, hair, and eyes are...
different from normal Solarians..."

FEI
"I've never paid attention to it so... Really?"

ELLY
"A long time ago, when I was small, I had a nanny. She was so nice to me.
But she was a land dweller. And First Class citizens rarely associate with them.
But the nanny lived in our house and took care of me.
She lost her child when she was in the 3rd Class area...
My dad felt sorry for her and kept her under his protection. But he never told anyone about her..."

FEI
"Why?"

ELLY
"My father was worried about my appearance... He had a reason for it.
She was probably my real..."

FEI
"Elly..."

[The water turns on again.]

ELLY
"I'd better not... I'm sure you don't want to hear about this...
Sorry."

FEI
"That's alright..."

[Camera pan up. Scene fade.]

[Begin music: "The Treasure that Cannot be Stolen"]

[Scene opens in Elly's room again. Fei is standing in front of the shower. Elly is across the side of the room from him. She has dressed herself. Camera behind Elly on the side at a distance.]

ELLY
"Now, it's your turn!"

[Fei walks up a step and shakes his head.]

FEI
"No thanks. I don't have time for that."

[Elly walks straight up to Fei.]

ELLY
"You need to relax. You don't get a chance like this very often.
Please?"

[Fei backs into the shower as Elly keeps walking towards him a step at a time. The door opens and closes when he gets in. Elly walks right up to the door.]

FEI
"Alright, if you insist!"

[Elly nods.]

ELLY
"You should've listened to me in the first place."

[Fei turns around and walks to the center.]

FEI
...!!

[The shower becomes enveloped in light again as Elly leaves. Fei takes off his clothes and turns the water on.]

FEI
Wa---a-a-a!!

ELLY
"You're fine. Just relax."

[Water starts to come out from underneath the shower. Elly walks back into view behind Fei on the side, looking at the shower.]

FEI
"Wow... feels good.
There's a world of difference between this and doc's old bathtub!"

[Fei realizes Elly is standing there.]

FEI
!!

[Fei jumps and turns away.]

FEI
"S, stop it! Stop staring at me!"

ELLY
"Don't worry, I'm not looking.
I'm just adjusting it. How's the temperature?"

FEI
"Hey, I'm fine. Go away, NOW!!"

ELLY
"Aha, ha... Fei's got a cute side to him."

FEI
...??

[Scene fade.]

[Scene opens in the back part of Elly's room. Fei is standing by a desk at the far end with his clothes on again, Elly is sitting sideways just below camera at the foot of her bed.]

FEI
"I feel refreshed... Now what am I gonna do... There's no time to relax."

ELLY
"Yes, I really don't want to...
but, there's no other choice..."

[Elly stands up.]

FEI
"You have any good ideas?"

[Elly turns to Fei.]

ELLY
"The network terminal in my father's room.
He got angry with me for touching it once.
There is numerous information only a handful of people have access to."

FEI
"So we can find out where Bart and the others are located from that?"

ELLY
"I... hope so."

[Fei and Elly reconvene and leave the room. Scene change.]

[Scene opens in the foyer. Fei and Elly walk down to the door above the first set of stairs and try it. But as they get there, Medena walks out of the lower level. Camera pan to behind Fei.]

MEDENA
"Oh, Elly... What are you doing in your father's room?
Don't you remember how mad he got last time? What am I going to do with you..."

[Medena walks back in. Fei and Elly walk in the door after her. Scene change.]

[Scene opens in the living quarters. The two walk up to Medena.]

MEDENA
"Elly... I'm so happy... Let me see you...
Your father said you'd be back. I almost gave up hope."

ELLY
"... Mother."

MEDENA
"Are you staying for a while? This time you should relax.
Your father will be so happy."

ELLY
"Yes... I guess."

MEDENA
"Let's have a nice meal. Fei, would you like to join us?
Elly never invites her friends over. I'm glad you're here."

[Medena stops.]

MEDENA
"Well, I'm going shopping, so make yourself comfortable."

[Medena leaves. Fei and Elly head back to the "off-limits" room and enter it. Scene change.]

[Scene opens in Elly's father's room. Fei and Elly head down to a desk at the end of the room. Fei backs up as Elly examines it. Camera pan to in front of Elly on the side.]

ELLY
"This is it.
If we can break through the palace network security by accessing this..."

[Elly touches the computer.]

ELLY
"ID...
The password would probably be something related to me."

[The computer is heard working.]

ELLY
" ' E L H A Y M '..."

COMPUTER
>>>Access denied. Enter the correct password.

ELLY
"That's no good. Let's try it backwards... 'M Y A H L E' "

COMPUTER
>>>Welcome to Solaris Net... You have 19 unread mails.

ELLY
"Yes! Got it! Let's see, we were here before so...
Wow, it connects to here!"

[Elly turns to Fei.]

ELLY
"Fei, we should be able to get to where everyone is,
from a trash chute in the 3rd Class citizen level!"

FEI
"That means, we're going back to that first location."

[Elly nods.]

ELLY
"Now we know where we are! Let's hurry!"

VOICE
Elly, where are you going?

[Begin music: "Fuse"]

[Camera pan over to the door to reveal a blond-haired, black-eyed tall man with a light mustache in a Gebler commander's uniform standing in front of Medena!]

ELLY
"Father!"

ELLY'S FATHER ERICH
"What're you doing, Elly...?
I told you before not to come in here and touch that machine."

ELLY
"..."

[Erich walks up to a panel obscured by the wall. A series of dialtones is heard.]

ERICH
"Is this the guard? It's me, Erich.
A burglar broke in here, yeah, come quickly."

[Camera pan with Erich as he walks into the desk area. Elly runs out from behind the desk.]

ELLY
"Father...!! Fei is not a burglar!!"

ERICH
"Then, what is he? A strange man in my room... Isn't he a burglar?"

[Erich turns towards the desk and pulls out a gun.]

ELLY
"There's a reason...!!"

[Elly shakes her head quickly.]

ELLY
"Please! Don't shoot him! Fei just wants to save his captured friends!
They're my friends too!"

ERICH
"No! Even if he is your friend,
I can't overlook a land dweller who tries to sneak into the palace!"

[Elly walks in front of Erich.]

ELLY
"Fine. Then I'm also a traitor. Go ahead and shoot me!"

ERICH
"No! You're staying here!
Now, move out of the way Elly!!"

ELLY
"No!"

ERICH
......

[Camera rotate around the entire area to behind Erich.]

ERICH
"You know how traitors're punished even if they're 1st Class citizens!
You'll be safe if we kill the intruders who know about us. I'm worried about your safety..."

[Begin music: "Lost and Broken Heart"]

[Elly turns to Fei.]

ELLY
"You're lying! You just hate being in any position that endangers you.
Isn't that why you didn't want me to join Jugend?
You just didn't want everyone to see your own daughter!"

[Elly turns back to Erich.]

ELLY
"Because I'm half a land dweller...!"

[Camera pan over to behind Medena.]

MEDENA
!!

[Medena runs out the door. Erich slaps Elly, and she falls to the floor, putting her face on her hand.]

ERICH
"I can't believe you still...?
How dare you say that in front of your mother...!"

[Erich puts the gun away.]

ELLY
"Because...!"

[Fei walks up to beside Elly and turns to Erich. Camera pan in closer to Fei's side.]

FEI
"Stop it!!
I don't want to see a father and a daughter fight because of me.
I won't cause you any more trouble. I came of my own will.
I'm an intruder. If I just get out of here it'll be fine."

[Elly stands up and turns to Fei.]

ELLY
"Fei!?"

[Fei turns to Elly.]

FEI
"Elly, you shouldn't say that in front of your mother.
I don't know the truth, but she is your mother, not a stranger. Isn't that right?"

[Elly looks down.]

ELLY
...

[Fei turns to Erich.]

FEI
"Now, get out of the way.
I hafta hurry to save my friends. But if you intend to shoot me, I'll put up a big fight."

[Erich walks away to the other side of the room and throws the gun down a chute. The others watch.]

ELLY
"? Father...?"

ERICH
"The intruder has escaped. Now get outta here.
It'll be a while until the guards get here."

FEI
...

[Erich turns back to Fei and Elly.]

ERICH
"You may be an intruder, but the fact is, you protected my daughter.
If I shoot you, I'll lose her."

ELLY
"Father..."

[Elly runs up to the other end of the desk and turns to Erich.]

ELLY
"Let me go with Fei...!"

[Erich turns to Elly.]

ERICH
"No. I can't let you go."

[Elly shakes her head.]

ELLY
"But...!"

[Fei walks to the other side of the room. Camera pan with Fei as he walks. He turns back to Elly. Camera behind Fei on the side.]

FEI
"That's alright. This is a land dweller problem now.
We won't trouble you any further. I'll go by myself."

[Elly turns to Fei.]

ELLY
"Fei!!"

[Fei walks a few steps towards the door and then turns back to Elly.]

FEI
"Elly, this time leave the military. Thanks for everything."

[Fei runs out the door quickly. Erich shifts slightly.]

ELLY
"Fei..."

[Scene fade.]
