Chapter 46: Lone Wolf

[Begin music: "Solaris, Eden of Heaven"]

[Scene opens on the main area of Solaris as Fei runs in from the traffic road. He returns to the operating room at the top of the F Block he came out of. Scene change.]

[Scene opens in the operating room again. As he walks towards the door, the soldier notices him.]

SOLDIER
Hey, you!! Aren't you the one from the dedication...?

FEI
...

SOLDIER
You're under arrest! Get in that door!!

[Fei walks in the door. Scene change. Stop music.]

[Scene opens in the upper ID area chamber. Camera on Fei's side as he faces the guard, who's back is to the door.]

[Begin music: "Invasion"]

[Fei assumes a defensive stance.]

FEI
"What're you going to do to me...?"

SOLDIER
As I suspected. You know nothing...!

[The soldier takes his uniform off. Underneath the paraphernelia is... Citan! Fei stands up.]

FEI
"Doc!! Citan, why are you here!?"

CITAN
"I saw Bart's image on the Birdvision in the dedication."

FEI
"You saw that too, doc?"

CITAN
"Yes. But I did not see either of you.
Soon after, I heard there was an intruder at the 2nd floor of the Arebato Grounds.
I suspected it was probably you so I waited here.
After that, I did not hear anything about the capture of any intruders."

FEI
"How did you know I was going to be here?"

[Citan turns to the side slightly, puts his face on his fist, and then drops it, looking down.]

CITAN
"The best possible way to sneak into the Palace is through the dust chute.
And to get back to the 3rd floor, one must pass through this observation tower.
I have always been thinking...
Do you think you could possibly be a little more subtle?
When infiltrating enemy ground, the most basic thing to do is to be stealthy.
With the amount of activity you have stirred up, you could even wake up the dead."

[Fei looks down.]

FEI
"Well, I was actually trying to be subtle..."

[Citan turns back to Fei and looks up.]

CITAN
"By the way, what happened to Elly? Was she not with you?"

[Fei turns around and looks up.]

FEI
"Elly... She went back home.
She really shouldn't have any relation with us land dwellers.
She already has such wonderful parents..."

[Citan assumes thinking mode.]

CITAN
"I see...
Yes. It may have been better for her that way. Let us head for the dust chute then."

[Fei turns around and nods.]

FEI
Yeah!

CITAN
"Now Fei, stay very close to me.
That way it does not pick up on your presence."

[Citan walks up to right by Fei, and they walk over the ID barrier without incident. Fei turns to the side slightly.]

FEI
??

[Fei walks towards camera a couple steps and turns back to Citan, looking down with his hands behind him.]

FEI
"Doc, hold on. How can you get past here?
According to Elly, only 1st Class citizens and military personnel can pass through...?"

[Citan puts his face on his fist, makes a couple of quick gestures with his hand and then looks up.]

CITAN
"Uh!? Well... that is...
P, probably they have not deleted my ID from the days I was in the military
and it is still stored in the data bank."

[Citan turns towards the ID device.]

CITAN
My, how the Solaris monitors are sloppy... Hahaha...

[Fei looks up.]

FEI
"...??"

[Fei and Citan return to the main area of Solaris' F Block. Scene change.]

[Scene opens on the main area of F Block. Fei and Citan run over to the dust chute. The guard by the dust chute has left (how convenient!). Fei and Citan drop in. Scene change.]

[Scene opens just outside the dust chute as Fei and Citan drop in. They head over to a switch beside the chute. Fei turns to Citan.]

CITAN
"We can probably get in with this switch..."

[Fei and Citan trade places. Citan hits the switch.]

COMPUTER
Card needed to activate the Vac-Sys... Please insert card.

[Citan turns around and assumes thinking mode.]

CITAN
"...... No go. What shall we do...?"

FEI
"What shall we do?? Didn't you have a plan?"

[Citan looks up and shakes his head.]

CITAN
"No, I am afraid not... I assumed we would just figure something out."

[Fei puts his hands behind him and looks down.]

FEI
...

VOICE
Wait!!

[Fei and Citan turn towards the entrance. Someone drops down the chute out of sight. Elly runs up to the group! Fei and Citan are startled by her appearance.]

CITAN
"Why Elly, it is you!"

FEI
"Elly!? What're you doing here?"

[Fei and Citan stand up straighter.]

ELLY
"Well... after that, when I was crying, my mother came to me and said...
'go with them'..."

[Stop music. Scene change.]

[Begin music: "The Treasure that Cannot be Stolen"]

[Scene opens in Elly's room. Elly is sitting on her knees on the bed. Camera behind and above Elly at a distance, on her side. Medena walks in behind Elly.]

MEDENA
Elly...

ELLY
...

MEDENA
"Elly, I think you should live your life the way you wish.
If your loved ones are in a crisis, you can't desert them..."

[Elly stands up.]

ELLY
"Mother... I'm sorry, for what I said earlier..."

MEDENA
"... I know. But there's no doubt that you're my child...
No matter what happens, you're my sweetheart..."

[Elly walks off the bed to Medena. Camera pan with Elly.]

ELLY
"Mom..."

MEDENA
"Now... You'd better hurry..."

[Elly nods.]

ELLY
"Yes... Take care mom..."

[Elly leaves the room. Scene change.]

[Scene opens in the foyer just outside Elly's room. Erich is standing outside. Camera behind Elly, on the side. Elly puts her hands on her mouth.]

ERICH
"Elly... Take this..."

[Erich walks straight up to Elly.]

[Item sound]

Received Army Cardkey.

[Elly drops her arms.]

ELLY
"... Father?"

ERICH
"To be human is to be able to pick your own path in life..."

ELLY
"... Father."

[Erich turns towards the front door.]

ERICH
"It looks like the military police are here..."

[The door opens and some Imperial guards begin to walk in. Erich and Elly go down to the main part of the foyer as they do. Camera pan with Elly. Erich sees one red guard and four brown ones. Elly stops at the bottom of the stairs. Camera above Erich's side.]

ERICH
"The Imperial Guard? Why are you here instead of the military police...?"

[The lead red-colored guard walks past Erich to in front of Elly. Camera rotate to behind the guards. Erich turns to the guard.]

ELLY
What?

ERICH
"What are you doing? The intruder fled.
My daughter has nothing to do with this!"

[The guard turns to Erich.]

GUARD
I can't, Lord Erich. Turn your daughter over to us. Lord Krelian's orders.

ERICH
"Lord Krelian? What does he want with my daughter... What?
You mean... Gazel's...!"

GUARD
You do not need to know.

[The guard turns to his companions.]

GUARD
Take her!

[The guards advance a step. Erich turns to all of them.]

ERICH
"Leave my daughter alone! Or else!"

[Elly turns to Erich.]

ELLY
"Father!?"

[The guard turns back to Erich.]

GUARD
W, what!? Lord Erich! Have you lost your mind?

ERICH
"I'm perfectly fine! Leave her alone!"

GUARD
Lord Krelian's orders are the Emperor's orders.
You realize what'll happen to your rank if you disobey this order?
You'll be demoted to 3rd Class citizen!

ERICH
"I know.
But even if it's Lord Krelian's order I will not allow my daughter to be Gazel's test subject.
Elly, go! I'll take care of this!"

[Elly shakes her head.]

ELLY
"But..."

ERICH
"Don't worry about me. Go help Fei."

ELLY
"Father..."

[Elly runs out the door between the guards quickly. Scene change.]

[Scene opens in the courtyard in front of Elly's house. As the scene opens, she runs through the courtyard to the gate and opens it. Scene begin fading as she reaches the gate. She continues to run. Scene fade.]

[Scene opens in the dust chute by the switch. Camera on everyone's side. Elly puts her hands in her face.]

ELLY
"Father, mother..."

[Fei walks up and puts a hand on Elly's shoulder.]

FEI
"Elly..."

[Citan assumes thinking mode.]

CITAN
"... The 'Ministry'......"

[Elly turns to Citan over Fei's shoulder.]

ELLY
"'Ministry'!? Father said that too!! What is the 'Ministry'?"

[Fei turns to Citan. Citan puts his face on his fist and then drops it, looking down.]

CITAN
"... You will find out."

[Fei turns back to Elly and assumes a defensive stance.]

FEI
"Let's go back! We gotta save him!"

[Elly shakes her head.]

ELLY
"We can't! If you go now, they'll catch you too.
My parents will be fine. Their military record should protect them.
... If necessary I'll turn myself in after everyone is rescued and that will settle it."

[Fei stands up.]

FEI
"But..."

ELLY
"Let's go.
Something might happen to them while we're just talking here."

[Citan turns to Elly and Fei and nods.]

CITAN
"I am worried for Elly's family, but...
Her father risked his life to get us this card. We must go on!"

[Fei and Elly turn back to Citan and nod.]

FEI
Yeah!

[Citan looks up at the dust chute.]

CITAN
"But in this filthy place? Spare me.
What I would not give for my old bathtub now! Do you not agree, Fei?"

[Fei turns to Elly. After a second, they both burst out laughing. Citan turns to them.]

CITAN
?

[They stop.]

FEI
"OK, let's go!"

[The group reconvenes.]

[Begin music: "Invasion"]

[The group walks up and Citan hits the switch. The dust chute sucks dust and the trio in and up it. Scene change. Stop music.]

[Scene opens at the other end of the dust chute on the side. Fei, Citan and Elly are thrown out and knocked to the floor at the top, except for Citan who somehow lands on his feet. Fei and Elly get up. Camera pan to in front of Fei on the side as he shakes his head.]

FEI
"It hurts, dammit."

[The group climbs up to the top of the shaft and stops a fan. They jump in the shaft, but Fei misses the ladder. Scene change.]

[Scene opens in the end of the dust chute again. The group falls into a trash compactor. Then they slowly climb out and jump down onto the ground. Fei shakes his head.]

FEI
"Phew, we barely escaped from getting trashed."

[They head back up again. This time, Fei doesn't miss the ladder and they proceed through an adjoining hallway. Scene change.]

[Scene opens in a room filled with large boxes, with some smaller paper boxes on top of them. The group walks down the stairs. Fei examines one of the paper boxes and his stomach growls. He looks down.]

FEI
"That reminds me... I'm hungry..."

[The group walks to the door. Fei and Elly turn and walk back to find some tins lying on the ground. Camera rotates to on the side of Elly.]

FEI
"Wow! There's some food here."

[Fei looks down.]

FEI
"Let's have a bite here."

[Fei turns to Elly. She nods.]

ELLY
"You're right...
We don't know what'll happen, so we shouldn't ask too much."

[Fei turns to Citan, who's standing a bit behind the others, and nods at him.]

FEI
"What about you, doc?"

[Citan shakes his head slowly, looking down.]

CITAN
"No, I am fine, thank you."

[Citan looks up.]

FEI
"Are you sure? Then, excuse us..."

[Fei turns back to the tins and nods.]

FEI & ELLY
"Let's eat."

[Fei and Elly kneel. Consumation sounds are heard for a minute. Then they stand up.]

FEI
"Whew, I'm full."

[Fei nods.]

FEI
"Well then, let's go!"

[The group goes through the door. Scene change.]

[Begin music: "Jaws of Ice"]

[Scene opens in a room with conveyor belts carrying food tins. The trio climbs up a ladder to an overlook and turns to see the conveyors carrying food tins through them. Camera behind Elly on the side. Fei looks down at the conveyor.]

FEI
"Is this... what we ate earlier...?"

[Elly walks up a step, and turns. She looks down at the conveyor.]

ELLY
"I see... The medicine we normally use is made here..."

[Fei's group jumps onto the conveyor and tries to walk through an area the conveyor is moving out of. A repetitive alarm sounds.]

COMPUTER
Foreign object detected, discharging object.

[The trio is deposited back below the conveyor. Fei turns to Citan.]

FEI
"Damn, we can't go forward."

[Citan turns to the conveyor.]

CITAN
"The sensor control room should have been there."

[Citan turns to Fei.]

CITAN
"If you turn off the foreign object detector,
you will be able to move forward."

[Stop alarm. The trio moves around and eventually finds the correct codes to turn the detectors off. They return to the control console and do so. They return to the conveyor area and move past some rather large heavy-working machines on them. They are suddenly attacked. Pause music.]

[Begin music: "Stage of Death"]

[Battle: Fei/Citan/Elly vs. Security Cube x4]

[Resume music. Scene re-opens on conveyor area. Camera rotates to the back part of the conveyor as Fei and Elly walk up to the railing with Citan behind them. Camera behind Fei, on the side. Some rather bloody-looking messes are on the conveyor and being sent into the processing machines the group just passed.]

ELLY
"I wonder... what kind of meat this is...?"

[Fei turns towards the back door, away from the conveyor, and shakes his head.]

FEI
"Yuck... I don't want to see where they make it."

[Fei walks towards the door at the back. Camera rotate to behind Citan on the side as he turns to Fei.]

CITAN
"Wait, Fei."

[Elly and Fei turn to Citan. Citan looks down, shakes his head slowly and then looks up again.]

CITAN
"You ate that food. Consider that fact when you open that door."

ELLY
"What about that canned food?"

FEI
"What is it...? What's supposed to be... there, exactly?"

[Citan looks down and towards the side of his shoulder.]

CITAN
"See for yourselves."

[The group goes in the door. Scene change. Stop music.]

[Scene opens in the next part of the conveyor room at the door. Fei, Citan and Elly walk in. Camera behind Elly. Pan with the group as they walk up the ramp to see better. Fei and Elly walk over to a railing above a conveyor. A huge vat from the ceiling is spitting stuff onto the conveyor. Camera behind Citan on the side.]

[Begin music: "Ominous"]

FEI
"Th... this... can't be..."

ELLY
"No... You must be kidding..."

[Flash scene red. Scene cut to above the vat over the conveyor closer to reveal human remains being spat out of it! Scene cut to side of one of the conveyors as the corpses are moved off, one after another. Scene cut to the front of the conveyor behind the direction it is going on the side. Scene cut to normal light on the opposite side of the room from everyone. Rotate as the camera moves closer to the group around the three conveyor vats, who continue to spit out human remains. Camera stop panning above the group at a large distance on the side. Scene cut to behind Citan on the side again.]

ELLY
"Uh..."

[Elly turns to the side, looks down, and then sort of sits down on air, holding her stomach. Fei turns to Elly and then to Citan. He gestures with his hands towards Citan.]

FEI
"What... is this... What... the hell is this...!!"

[Camera rotate quickly around Fei as the vat makes a noise. Scene lights up white.]

FEI
"Wo-o-o-o-o-!"

[Continue fade to white quickly until entire screen is white.]

[Fade in on a control booth. A woman stands there, looking out the panel. A quick glimpse shows her to be the same as the dream woman from before (see Chapter 17). Scene fade back to white after half a second. Scene fade in on the control room again, on the other side of the window. A young boy who looks like Fei is lying on an operating table with his eyes closed. The woman watches from the other side of the glass. Camera on the boy's side opposite the window. Fade back to white after a half second. Fade back in to the conveyor area behind Citan on the side. Fei has sat down facing Citan, next to Elly, who's still in her mid-air seat. Citan looks down and shakes his head, then he turns to his shoulder.]

CITAN
"Soylent System.
The organism experiment lab and its disposal facility in Solaris."

[Citan keeps talking.]

CITAN
"And the production facility for food and medicine to maintain the Limiter seal.
Aquvy's Wels Reapers were also made here."

[Citan looks up and assumes thinking mode.]

CITAN
"Elly, do you remember Dominia's words during our infiltration of Shevat?
Here is the answer.
People of her native country served as one of the origins for Wels... the M plan.
They were used that way because of their peculiar abilities.
She is the last survivor.
Elly, your father, Erich, used to be the superintendent of this facility.
He was involved in the research with Maria's father."

[Elly stands up and turns to Citan.]

ELLY
"Don't be ridiculous!
My father'd never take part in such a thing!"

[Citan shakes his head and looks up.]

CITAN
"Naturally, Erich always had pangs of guilt.
So he kept as many land dwellers as possible under his protection as 3rd Class citizens.
Then he resigned. That's why he is on the administrative staff of the Special Forces now."

[Elly folds her arms and looks down.]

ELLY
"My father... did that... No, it can't be true..."

CITAN
"Now, get up, Fei. Get up and look it over..."

[Fei stands up and turns to the conveyor. He shakes his head.]

FEI
"Could... this be... true...? Doc..."

[Citan assumes thinking mode.]

CITAN
".. This is reality."

[Citan drops his arms.]

CITAN
"Let's go."

[Fei and Elly walk to the far door and enter. A death scream is heard from the system. Citan stops. Camera rotate to behind Citan on the side. He turns around and assumes thinking mode.]

CITAN
"To end a person's life, and then consume their flesh.
Is that, permissible...?"

[Citan looks up and nods. He walks in after them. Scene change.]

[Begin music: "Jaws of Ice"]

[Scene opens in the back part of the first area of the conveyor, other side. The group walks in a door and heads on. Stop music. Scene change.]
