Xenogears: The Complete Script Part 21 Chapter 49: Shot Down! Compiled by [EDITOR'S NOTE: From here on to the end of the game, Xenogears' biggest disappointment appears. The unexpected budget cuts that were forced upon Xenogears by Squaresoft are obvious from here to the end of the game. Most of the remaining part of the story is told through a narration by some of the characters. The character who is indicated narrating sits in a chair bathed in sunlight, surrounded by starry backgrounds as stills of the action that was not able to be produced with the budget cuts and time frame cut are shown in the background. The pendant that has been shown periodically to this point swings silently in the background. The script will refer to this scene as the "Nebulous" from here on out. Many of us hope that Episode V will be remade especially from here on when the Xeno "saga" returns to it. Anyway, when the character is narrating and not actually in action, his/her name will be followed by an asterisk (Example: FEI). This will automatically indicate that they are sitting in the nebulous chair.] [Fade scene from black to white. Fade in to the nebulous.] [Begin music: "The Treasure that Cannot be Stolen"] FEI Dreaming... I was dreaming... Perhaps it may have been but a long forgotten memory... A dream... A memory... Things remembered when one is asleep... Things forgotten when one is awake... Where the deepest layers of memories become the outmost layers of one's dreams... Which are reality? Which are illusions? One cannot tell until one awakes... Or perhaps they are, at the same time, both truth and fiction... A vast nebulous... With no boundaries... An emptiness equivalent to my own existence... I dreamt such a dream... A long... Never-ending, dream... [Scene fade to white. Fade music.] VOICE ... La... can... [Begin music: "Distant Promise"] [Scene fade in on the Nisan room of Sophia (see Chapter 14). Camera in front of the pendant-shaped window as light pours in.] VOICE "Lacan, what is wrong?" [A pause.] VOICE "Lacan?" FEI* In that dream, I was called 'Lacan'... I was an artist... I had become recognized as a talented artist and now was painting the portrait of the Nisan Mother, 'Sophia'... [Scene fade/switch.] [Scene fade in behind and above Lacan as he paints the portrait of Sophia. Sophia sits near the door.] LACAN "Huh... no, it is nothing." SOPHIA "... Let us finish for today. You look rather tired. ... Are you alright?" LACAN "I am fine, thank you... But, now that you mention it..." [Lacan stops painting and looks at Sophia.] LACAN "Shall we stop for the day? You must be the one who is tired, 'Mother Sophia'?" SOPHIA "Enough of that, now." [Sophia pauses briefly.] SOPHIA "When it is just the two of us, would you stop calling me that. Just call me 'Elly'... As you used to do in the old days... And you don't have to be so stiff and formal." [Lacan shakes his head, looks at the painting and nods.] LACAN "Oh, errh, alright. Very wel... no, I mean... Yes, let's do that, 'Elly'!" [Lacan looks at Sophia. Fade scene to white. Scene change.] [Scene fade in on a still of the room in the nebulous.] FEI* 'Elly'... It was a time when she went by such a name. A time when we had met up with one another... A time when nothing mattered between us... It was better that way... Just two people, together... It was better to have left it that way... [Scene fade to white. Scene change.] [Scene fade in on the room of Sophia again. Lacan looks at Sophia/Elly, and then walks over to the beam of sunlight. He turns and looks up through the ceiling.] LACAN "I think I might go back home... only for a week or so." ELLY "Oh, really? What is the matter?" [Lacan looks down. Then he looks up and looks at Elly, sort of.] LACAN "I ran out of paint. So... I, errh, need to go make some more." ELLY "You're going all that way... just to do that?" [Lacan turns his head back, looks up at the ceiling and then nods.] LACAN "If I don't go there, I won't be able to get the right pigments." [Lacan looks at Elly halfway. She stands up and walks out of the chair.] ELLY "Oh... Then how about I have one of my followers, the -Kahal-, take you in one of our Gears?" [Elly continues.] ELLY "You'll arrive quicker and you'll be much more safe." [Darken scene.] FEI* I lied... I wasn't out of paint. I just feared I would finish the portrait. I wanted to keep on painting... forever. So I wanted to buy time... She'd probably despise me for that... No, she'd probably just give me her usual smile. She was that kind of woman... [Scene fade.] [Scene fade in on the nebulous.] FEI* Dreams... A life of a man named Lacan... And the lives of countless other men... All but dreams... Now that I am awake, those countless numbers of long, heartrending dreams are almost impossible to remember at all... In those dreams, I loved one woman... No matter the day, No matter the era... That did not change... Nor did her name... [Scene fade.] [Scene fade in on the nebulous. A still of Elhaym Van Houten is seen behind him.] FEI* That dream changed me... That dream was the catalyst for me to resolve what my purpose was. I think I know now... What I have to do... That long, long memory of a dream... Perhaps it was the memory of my soul... [Scene fade to white. Stop music.] ----- [Begin music: "The Treasure that Cannot be Stolen"] [Scene fade in on the nebulous. The narrator is present-day Elly.] ELLY* A dream... I was dreaming a dream... Or perhaps it was a memory from a distant past... A dream... A memory... Those words I was unable to convey... That day... That time... Those thoughts I was unable to carry out... Words and thoughts... The connection between the two... Without words, thoughts cannot be conveyed... Without thoughts, there are no words... They are both as vital as each other... They can never be divided... Like the wings of angels... Like a man and a woman... An unchangeable destiny... Feelings one wishes one could change... Meeting with the person who would change me... And watching myself change... I dreamt such a dream... A long... Never-ending, dream... [Scene fade to white. Stop music.] VOICE ... La... can... [Begin music: "Distant Promise"] [Scene fade in on the room of Sophia at the pendant-shaped wall, opposite angle from before.] VOICE "Lacan, what is wrong?" [A pause.] VOICE "Lacan?" ELLY* In that dream, I was called 'Sophia'... Mother Sophia... A symbolic name... Crowned upon the person who would be the people's hope... A name I was destined to have whether I wanted it or not... [Scene fade/switch.] [Scene fade in on the bottom of the room. Lacan is painting Sophia's portrait again. Camera this time is above Sophia, on the side, however.] LACAN "Huh... no, it is nothing." SOPHIA "... Let us finish for today. You look rather tired. ... Are you alright?" LACAN "I am fine, thank you... But, now that you mention it..." [Lacan stops painting and looks at Sophia.] LACAN "Shall we stop for the day? You must be the one who is tired, 'Mother Sophia'?" SOPHIA "Enough of that, now." [Sophia pauses briefly.] SOPHIA "When it is just the two of us, would you stop calling me that. Just call me 'Elly'... As you used to do in the old days... And you don't have to be so stiff and formal." [Lacan shakes his head, turns back to the portrait and nods.] LACAN "Oh, errh, alright. Very wel... no, I mean... Yes, let's do that, 'Elly'!" [Lacan looks at Sophia. Fade scene to white.] [Scene fade in on the nebulous. A still of the Nisan room, same as the last still, is shown.] ELLY* 'Elhaym'... I've always liked that name... Because, when I first met him, that is what he called me... That is my true name... [Scene fade to white.] [Scene fade in on the Nisan room again. Lacan looks at Sophia/Elly, and then walks over to the beam of sunlight. He turns and looks up through the ceiling.] LACAN "I think I might go back home... only for a week or so." ELLY "Oh, really? What is the matter?" [Lacan looks down. Then he looks towards Elly, sort of.] LACAN "I ran out of paint. So... I, errh, need to go make some more." That is what I wished for... So, I had him paint me... The way I really am... [Scene fade.] [Scene fade in on the nebulous.] ELLY* Dreams... A life of a woman named Sophia... Stop music.] [Scene fade in on a large tube similar to the one Krelian was showing Lacan (see Chapter 44). Inside of the tube floats Fei. He is nude. Camera in front of Fei as he bobs in the tube.] [Begin music: "The Valley Where the Wind is Born"] [Camera pan back away from Fei's tube to the right to a desk with a candle and a wall filled with books. A strange looking old dome-headed man is at the desk. An error alarm sounds three times.] MYSTERIOUS OLD MAN "Hmm... He's finally awake..." [The man gets up from the desk and walks to in front of Fei's tube. He fiddles with a computer screen.] MYSTERIOUS OLD MAN Here you go... [The top of Fei's tube opens. Scene fade.] [Scene opens in the room again. Fei is out of the tube now, and is back in his clothes. The old man stands in front of the desk. Camera behind Fei on the side. He examines his arm and then looks up.] FEI "I'm... healed..." MYSTERIOUS OLD MAN "You've been sleeping in this Nanoreactor for three weeks." FEI "Nanoreactor? Who are you...?" MYSTERIOUS OLD MAN "Me...?" [The man walks over to the bookshelves.] MYSTERIOUS OLD MAN "I forgot my name... Some people call me Taura..." [The man turns back to Fei.] TAURA "You seemed to have recovered completely. Those were terrible wounds, but maybe your youth and strength helped..." [Camera pan with Taura as he walks slowly over to the Nanoreactor on the other side of Fei's. Fei turns around and moves towards it as Taura walks to the back. Inside of this Nanoreactor, Elly is doubled over. She is also in a nude state.] TAURA "But your friend's wounds are more serious and may take a while longer..." FEI "My friend...?" [Fei stops and realizes who he's looking at.] FEI "Elly!!" [Fei pauses looking at Elly.] FEI "Elly..." TAURA "Hey! Quit staring at the naked girl and come over here!" FEI !! [Fei turns around quick. Taura walks in a door at the back. Camera pan into Elly's tube. A sound is heard and she shifts towards Fei's direction. Fei turns back at the sound.] FEI "Elly...?" [Camera pan back to room. Fei follows Taura. Scene change.] [Scene opens in the next chamber. Camera behind Fei on the side. Standing at the other end of the front room is none other than Citan.] CITAN "Fei!!" [Citan runs up to Fei.] FEI "Doc!!" CITAN "I heard from Taura and hurried right over here! Boy, was that lucky. You were fortunate to have come down near Taura's research facility..." TAURA "Hm... This is no research facility. It is 'a man's hideaway'!" [Fei and Citan walk into the main part of the room. Camera rotate around them to reveal Taura at a table. Taura turns to Fei. Camera behind Citan on the side.] TAURA "Citan told me about you. I was shocked to see a couple lying down with blood all over them." FEI A couple... CITAN "At any rate, you had a narrow escape. Fei, make sure you thank Taura!" [Fei looks down.] FEI "Taura, thank you very much... for helping Elly..." [Fei puts his hands on his hips.] FEI "Both Elly and I were hurt so badly... What is that machine...?" [Taura turns towards the back room.] TAURA "It's called a Nanoreactor. It is a device that can rebuild substances at the molecular level. Not only can it just heal humans, but theoretically it should also be able to create many substances." [Fei looks up.] FEI "Is that the same thing as that guy in Solaris...? I mean... Is that the same thing as Krelian is studying?" [Taura turns to Fei.] TAURA "Yes, that's right." [Taura turns away from Fei.] TAURA "I was the one who taught Nanotechnology to him..." FEI "You did?" [The error alarm is heard from the back room. Taura turns towards the door.] TAURA "We shouldn't waste time talking about such an unimportant subject. Looks like her treatment is done." [Taura walks towards the door. Fei turns and starts to follow. Taura turns back and stops him.] TAURA "Oh, you don't need to come. Just wait there." [Taura leaves. Fei walks over to where Taura was standing. Camera rotate around to in front of Fei at a distance on the side.] FEI "..." CITAN "Fei..." [The door opens. They turn to it. Elly is now dressed, and walks out. Taura walks out behind her. Citan walks up near Fei.] FEI "Elly!!" ELLY "Fei... I..." [A pause.] TAURA "Ahem! Now, why don't you two go get some fresh air outside? It ought to ease the shock of the change." [Stop music. Scene change.] [Begin music: "The Treasure that Cannot be Stolen"] [Scene opens on top of Taura's hut. Fei and Elly stand there. Camera behind and above Fei slightly. He faces Elly, and then turns around from her.] FEI "I knew it was you..." ELLY "Fei...?" FEI "When you came in the room just then... I was afraid you may have forgotten about me and everything else..." ELLY "What do you mean...?" FEI "I mean... because... Elly, you seemed a little different than before..." [Elly turns in the other direction.] ELLY "Has my face... changed?" [Fei turns back towards Elly and shakes his head. He looks down.] FEI "No, that's not it... It's more like..." [Fei puts his hands behind him.] FEI "I mean your atmosphere or impression is different... just a little..." [Camera rotate around to behind Elly on the side. Fei turns away, still looking down with his hands behind him.] FEI "But, I felt something familiar... I felt the same way when I met you for the first time... Some peculiar feeling like we've met before, somewhere..." [Elly walks away a slow step. She looks down.] ELLY "Fei..." [Fei looks up and turns to Elly.] FEI "Yes?" [Elly looks up.] ELLY "I don't remember much what happened after we were shot down..." [Fei nods.] FEI "It's better that way." [Elly turns around and shakes her head slowly.] ELLY "But I heard someone calling my name... I felt I was covered with something very warm... I remember that clearly..." FEI "..." [Elly nods slowly.] ELLY "Thank you, Fei." FEI "Elly..." [Camera pan in slowly. Fei takes a slow step towards Elly. Elly takes a slow step towards Fei.] ELLY "Fei..." TAURA "Hey, it's almost time for you to come back. There's something important we need to talk to you about." FEI ... [Fei turns to the side towards camera and nods.] FEI "A, alright, we're coming!" [Fei turns back to Elly.] FEI "Well, Elly, shall we go see what's up?" [Elly nods.] ELLY "S, sure..." [Fei gets turned around and starts for the exit.] ELLY "Fei, where are you going? Taura is calling you!" [Fei finally finds the door (wasn't TOO hard! :P) and he and Elly walk in. Scene change. Stop music.] [Begin music: "The Valley Where the Wind is Born"] [Scene opens in the front room of Taura's hideaway. Fei and Elly walk to the back room. Scene change.] [Scene opens in Taura's nanoreactor lab. Camera behind the door. Pan with Fei and Elly as they walk over to Taura and Citan. Taura turns around to the group in front of the Nanoreactor. Camera rotate to behind Taura.] TAURA "How do you feel now? The fresh forest air should have refreshed you somewhat, heh?" [Taura pauses.] TAURA "Anyway... It's about the removal of the seal... I found out it can be released by using the Nanotechnology that regenerated you two." [Taura continues.] TAURA "The Nanoassemblers are enclosed in this pod." CITAN "If only we could scatter them all over the world..." [Taura turns to Citan.] TAURA "There's an ancient military installation nearby... We might be able to use the 'Mass-driver' located in there to launch this pod into the upper atmosphere. Once the Nanoassemblers are released up there, the convection currents should spread 'em over the world!" [Taura turns to Fei.] TAURA "I wish I could go do it... but I am getting much too old for that type of thing. Then again, it's for your future. An old man should not butt in. You young ones must do it for yourselves!" [Taura walks up to Fei.] TAURA "Here." [Taura continues.] TAURA "And, of course, I'm not asking you to do it for free. Try this wrist band on." FEI ? [Fei puts his arm out, turns to the side and examines his wrist as he puts the band on.] CITAN "What is that?" [Taura turns to Citan.] TAURA "This is an 'Emotion Control Device' in which nanotechnology is applied. From this machine shaped as a wrist band, nanomachines are infused through your epidermis into your brain. There they refine the SSRI intracerebral substances, such as Serotonin, that control emotions." [Fei turns back to Taura, confused.] FEI ?? [Taura turns to Fei.] TAURA "Well, I suppose it's rather difficult for you to understand... But in short, it means that the manifestation of your second personality, 'Id', can be suppressed." [Fei walks to the corner and looks down.] FEI "Id..." [Elly walks a step towards Fei.] ELLY "Fei..." TAURA "Well, it's all theoretical though... Oh, and I did one more thing as well...! I installed the same control device in your Gear..." CITAN "You mean, it can release Id at will...?" [Fei turns towards Taura.] TAURA "Yes. I called it 'System Id'. But of course it should not be over-used. Use it only as a last resort." [Fei turns to Elly, and then back to Taura and Citan.] FEI "Elly, doc, I..." CITAN "Fei, there was nothing you could do... It will never happen again with Taura's technology though. He is one of the three Shevat sages." TAURA "Whether you believe it or not, it's up to you." FEI "..." [Three knocks are heard.] TAURA "Oh? It sounds like we have a guest!" [Elly and Fei group up and walk around.] TAURA "Was that a visitor I heard?" CITAN "Fei, it is alright." [Fei and Elly go back to the front room. Scene change. Stop music.] [Begin music: "Fuse"] [Scene opens in the front room behind Fei. A Shevat emissary has entered the room and stands in front of them.] SHEVAT EMISSARY "Fei...! We've got problems!!" [Camera rotate around to the side as Fei and Elly walk out to the table. Camera rotate back to Fei's side.] SHEVAT EMISSARY "Today, a peace settlement between Aveh and Kislev is being held at Shevat... But, Solaris' mobile weapons are approaching Shevat as we speak! Please, help us!" [Taura walks in from the back and turns towards the emissary.] TAURA "That has nothing to do with this young man!!" SHEVAT EMISSARY "Taura!!" [Taura walks up directly to the emissary. Citan walks in behind Fei and Elly.] TAURA "You're getting on my nerves for being so selfish. Citan told me about you. You showed up after finding out that Id is now controllable... Aren't you ashamed? You haven't changed since then. You only care about yourselves." [Taura turns to Fei.] TAURA "Fei! You don't need to listen to these guys who once tried to kill you!!" FEI "But..." CITAN "..." [Elly turns away.] ELLY "Please go. I'll go to the Mass-driver..." [Fei turns towards Elly.] FEI "Elly?" [Elly walks away a few feet.] ELLY "No matter what happened before, Shevat needs your help now. Although you may be saving some selfish people... there is still the world and its countries with many more innocent people. Please, don't forget that." [Elly turns back to Fei.] ELLY "Bart and his people are fighting to protect those same lives, aren't they? So, please go help them!" FEI "Are you sure? What about you?" [Elly shakes her head.] ELLY "Don't worry about me. I'll manage somehow." FEI "But, all by yourself..." CITAN "I will accompany Elly. You do not need to worry. I have brought along my own Omnigear." [Fei turns to Citan.] FEI "Your own Omnigear...?" CITAN "Yes my Omnigear, 'Fenrir'. It is the same one I brought from Solaris. I left it with Gaspar in case of emergencies." [Fei nods.] FEI "Doc... Alright. Please take care of her for me." [Fei turns to Elly.] FEI "Elly, be careful." [Elly nods.] ELLY "I will." SHEVAT EMISSARY "We are truly grateful for your kindness, Fei!!" TAURA "Hmph! Suit yourselves." [The emissary walks to the door. Fei follows him. They stop when the emissary gets to the door. Elly turns towards them.] FEI "Ignas, right?" [The emissary turns to Fei.] SHEVAT EMISSARY "Yes. The goal of the enemy is to destroy the cities in Ignas. They have already destroyed half of Bledavik and will probably reach Nisan in about four hours. Shevat will try to drive them back with all the power it has!" FEI "Four hours... That's cutting it close!" [Taura turns to Fei.] TAURA "No need to worry. Balthasar and I fixed your Gear with the nanomachines. It's much more powerful than it ever was before. Why, you should get there in half the time." [Fei turns to Taura.] FEI "What? Is old man Bal here?" CITAN "Emeralda is here as well." [Stop music. Scene change.] [Begin music: "The Blue Traveler"] [Scene opens outside Taura's hut. Camera looks up from the ground at Weltall. However, it's much larger and bulkier than it was previously. It still has the same colors, but looks like a completely different Gear except for the color. Camera rotate around the Gear slowly, revealing huge thrusters in the back. Continue to rotate up towards the head. Stop in front of the head, which looks down towards the ground. Camera pan down to in front of the Gear. Ol' man Bal stands in front of the Gear. Emeralda, Fei, Taura and the emissary are in front of him. Camera behind and above the four. Fei walks up to Ol' man Bal.] FEI "This is incredible!" OL' MAN BAL "We meet again!" [Ol' man Bal turns to the Gear.] OL' MAN BAL "The host for the spirit of the slayer of god... I didn't think I would ever work on it again...!" [Fei turns to Taura, then quickly back to Ol' man Bal.] FEI "But why are you both helping me...?" [Taura and Ol' man Bal turn to Fei.] TAURA "There are some things you just can't explain with the word... fate. You're just going to have to see it with your own eyes." [Emeralda turns to Fei.] EMERALDA "Fei... Going?" [Fei turns to Emeralda and nods.] FEI "Yeah, I'd better hurry!" [Emeralda walks away. Fei takes a quick step towards where she was.] FEI "Hey! Where are you going?" [The emissary turns to Fei.] SHEVAT EMISSARY "Fei, please hurry!!" [Fei turns to the emissary and nods.] FEI "A, alright." [Scene fade/switch.] [Scene fade in behind Weltall-2 on the side as its thrusters ignite with blue flame. Camera rotate around to its left side, with the remaining people standing a distance away opposite from it. Weltall-2 takes off from the ground and leaves in a flash. Scene fade. Stop music.] ----- [Begin music: "The Treasure that Cannot be Stolen"] [Scene opens above Taura's hut. Pan down to the roof to reveal Elly and Citan standing together. Citan turns to Elly.] CITAN "Are you sure you want to go through with this? You wanted to live quietly away from the battlefield, did you not?" [Elly turns away from Citan and looks down. Camera pan down to in front of Elly on the side.] ELLY "I noticed myself running away from reality... At first, I thought my situation was similar to his. I thought Fei would understand my feelings... I didn't know if my love for him was real... I might have been desperate after losing my mother and father..." CITAN "Elly..." [Elly turns to Citan and looks up.] ELLY "Despite all that... I may still love him... That's why, I want to see what Fei can do and what I can do. I want us to be apart and think about ourselves again." [Elly turns towards the side. Camera rotate around to behind Citan on the side.] ELLY "I want to see... how I really feel..." CITAN ... [Citan pauses.] CITAN "You have changed a lot, Elly. What happened to you in the past three weeks?" [Elly turns to Citan and looks down.] ELLY "Really? I don't think I've changed..." [Citan assumes thinking mode.] CITAN "Yes, you have. I should say... you have matured... ... Like a mother..." [Elly jumps.] ELLY "Excuse me! I'm only 18 years old. I'm nowhere near the age of being your mother!" [Citan turns to the side, and then bursts out in jubilant laughter.] CITAN "Sorry. You gave me that impression. That is all." [Citan stops and turns back to Elly.] ELLY "Anyway Citan, I'm going now." [Citan nods.] CITAN "Alright. I will follow you as soon as I finish off here..." [Emeralda walks in behind Citan. Citan turns to see her.] EMERALDA "I, I go, too." ELLY What? EMERALDA I go! [Elly walks up to Emeralda and kneels in front of her.] ELLY "Emeralda, I can't take anyone else along with me for something like this. I'll be fine on my own." [Emeralda turns around.] EMERALDA "If Elly go, I go too. Emeralda have to go with you." [Elly stands up.] ELLY "Emeralda...?" [Emeralda turns to Elly and jumps.] EMERALDA "No! Emeralda go too!" [Citan turns towards Emeralda.] CITAN "Why not let her go? I am sure Solaris has a hunch about the Limiter. They may interfere, so you may feel uneasy going it alone. I think Emeralda is cut out for this job." [Elly turns to Citan. Citan turns to the side slightly, puts his face on his fist and then drops it.] CITAN (... Besides, she is going to want to go no matter what. Take care of her until I can join you, please?) [Elly nods. She turns back and kneels in front of Emeralda.] ELLY "Okay, you win.
