Chapter 59: First and Last

[Scene fades in on a hanging plateau. Fei, Citan and Bart are at the foot of it. Bart walks up several feet, and turns back to Citan and Fei.]

[Begin music: "Omen"]

CITAN
"What is this place...!?"

FEI
"This is where it all started. This is our genesis!
We... no, humans were born here."

[The group walks up to a structure. Pan slowly with the group. Pan down to behind and above Fei at a distance behind Citan and Bart.]

FEI
"... Long ago, Deus crash-landed on this planet in an interplanetary colony ship.
In order to revive itself someday, Deus detached the Zohar Modifier's core...
After this core unit came down here, a single woman awoke and arose from out of it."

[Fei pauses.]

FEI
"She's the mother of all humanity..."

[Fei pauses again.]

FEI
"After she awoke, she used all her power to bear several beings.
These would become the ancestors of the whole of humanity."

[Fei continues.]

FEI
"These were the Emperor and the Gazel Ministry."

[Fei walks up closer to the structure. Camera rotate slowly to behind Fei on the side behind his friends at a distance.]

FEI
"Finally, she gave birth to replicas of herself to be humanity's caretakers."

[Bart and Citan walk up closer to Fei and turn towards the object he's looking at. A green tube is just barely seen at the top.]

FEI
"Two selves... The -human- Mother and the weapon...
The Subject and the Complement."

[Fei pauses.]

FEI
"That is Elly and... Miang."

[Fei pauses again.]

FEI
"I, the sole survivor from the colony ship, met Elly and...
Everything started from there..."

[Fei pauses.]

FEI
"The land of genesis, -Kadomony-... This is that place."

BART
"Yeah, but Fei...
Even with your shared fate with Deus, why do you have such ancient memories...?"

[Fei turns to Bart and shakes his head.]

FEI
"Usually, human memories cannot be passed down through the generations.
Humans do not normally have the ability to compress and store memories in their introns."

[Fei turns to the side and looks at the structure.]

FEI
"But Elly and I... and Miang... are different."

[Fei turns to the structure and looks down.]

FEI
"Due to our connection with the 'Wave Existence'...
That is, due to Zohar's ability to change possible phenomena, we can clearly store data in our introns.
In other words, we can leave behind memories to be inherited by our descendants."

[Fei looks up, extends his wrist and clasps it with his other hand.]

FEI
"Just as the Wave Existence is bound inside of Zohar...
the information is affixed to me, so to speak, by some of the power of the Wave Existence."

[Scene cut to behind Fei's group. Bart and Citan walk up in front of him towards the structure, Citan moving a little closer than the others. Camera pan slowly in to behind Citan. A green tube with a figure enveloped in the top of it is just barely able to be seen.]

CITAN
"Then this is...!"

[Fei puts his hands down, turns in Citan's direction and looks up.]

FEI
"This is the form from when Elly and Miang were still one being...
This is the first woman of our world..."

[Scene cut to the side of the structure. Pan in closer to the tube. A blue-haired woman is in suspended animation inside the tube, clothed in some sort of protective gear.]

FEI
... Our mother...

[Darken scene. Scene change. Stop music.]

[Scene opens in a rather technological looking room. Gathered around an insignia in the center are Fei, Citan, Bart, Billy, Rico, Emeralda, Maria, Maison, Margie, Sigurd, Zephyr and Taura. Chu-Chu is sitting in something resembling a command seat at the back of the room. Camera behind and above Billy, and Fei on the side. Sigurd has his arms folded.]

[Begin music: "The Blue Traveler"]

[Bart looks down and folds his arms.]

BART
"... So if we destroy that Zohar thing, everything will be over, right?"

[Citan turns to Bart and nods.]

CITAN
"Yes.
The source of our Ether powers, and the source of power for the generators that make our Gears work...
It all comes from the 'Zohar Modifier' engine which can control any potential phenomena.
If we destroy it, Deus... and the -Seraph- angels... will all be deactivated...
And then we should also be able to free Elly, who has become bound to the Deus weapon system as 'Miang'."

[Citan turns to Fei.]

CITAN
Right, Fei?

[Bart and Fei turn to each other. Fei nods.]

FEI
"Yeah. That's what the 'Wave Existence' said."

[Citan assumes thinking mode.]

CITAN
"But then there is the downside...
It will also mean that we will no longer be able to use our Gears or our Ether powers anymore."

[Rico turns to Citan.]

RICO
"What are those -Seraph- angels all about anyway?
That odd appearance as if they lack something... as if they were neither living beings nor mere weapons..."

[Citan turns to Rico in thinking mode.]

CITAN
"Zohar senses the human consciousness and incarnates the -Seraphs-."

BILLY
"Human consciousness...?"

[Citan turns to Billy and looks up.]

CITAN
"Zohar itself involves the principle of uncertainty.
The observer's perception of Zohar determines the entity it actually becomes.
In other words, I believe that those angels are incarnations of the spirits of people...
... The people who have been absorbed by Deus to become parts of it."

[Bart looks down and folds his arms.]

BART
"So what merit is there for them to gain in eliminating all of civilization?"

[Maria turns to Citan.]

MARIA
"Is it some kind of hatred for those humans who have survived?"

[Citan turns to Maria and shakes his head.]

CITAN
"Of course not.
Those people who were created and assimilated as parts for Deus would not have such intentions.
Try to remember what Elly, when she became Miang, said."

[Citan turns to Fei.]

FEI
" 'The creations of god will someday be a hindrance...
That is why they must be eliminated...' "

[Citan assumes thinking mode.]

CITAN
"Yes. That is why Merkava is being used to begin the destruction.
But... Deus is not following its programming of exterminating all of civilization...
The -Seraphs-, which are terminal interface weapons of Deus, are using their bodies composed of...
... nanomachines to absorb massive numbers of people regardless of whether they are dead or alive.
It is not discriminating between the mutant and non-mutant people. This is highly peculiar...
... The fact that the people who are meant to be destroyed are being taken in as well...
That is the absolute opposite of what it is supposed to be doing."

[Citan looks up.]

FEI
"Maybe there aren't enough parts?"

[Citan shakes his head slowly.]

CITAN
"That is unlikely.
Aside from those bodies that were destined to be parts for it...
... Deus, who has already acquired the abilities of the nanomachines, can just about use any material...
... to construct its body. It is obvious, it has other intentions in mind."

[Citan assumes thinking mode.]

CITAN
"Those intentions... Krelian has called Deus the mother.
If god is the mother, then those motives are coming from the Great Mother...
Impending the growth of its child, enveloping it, to bring the child back to the womb to become one with it.
That is its motive. Such a program does not exist within its design though.
It was probably given this unique will by someone. Either from Elly who has merged with the Deus or..."

[Fei assumes a defensive stance.]

FEI
"Either way, it doesn't change the fact that we have to fight.
Regardless of what their intentions are. The problem is how we're supposed to deal with them.
You think we can do it in our current state?"

[Fei stands up. Zephyr turns to the center.]

ZEPHYR
"This secret battleship, Excalibur, will also take part in the final battle.
Additionally, the military potential of all the surface forces will assemble here."

[Citan and Bart look up. Bart extends his arms to his sides.]

BART
"Even if we can put together a massive force...
... we still have the problem with the main armament of the Merkava.
We need to know how to take that out. As long as we don't do that..."

[Citan turns to Bart and nods.]

CITAN
"Merkava's ultra-long-range cannon has the ability to vaporize any substance.
On top of that, they have a barrier around their perimeter that nullifies all attacks."

[Zephyr turns to Citan.]

ZEPHYR
"We've fought against the Merkava many times to try to stop its onslaught.
However, we cannot even get close. Hence, we have had to withdraw everytime."

[Fei turns around and then turns to the side, throwing a punch in the air. He keeps his fist extended.]

FEI
"Dammit! No matter how much we want to save Elly...
... if we can't get inside the Merkava, it's meaningless."

[Bart puts his arms down.]

SIGURD
"To add to that, there is the problem of those -Seraphs-.
... They function as the terminal interface weapons for close defense.
I can easily say that their attack power is equivalent to the Omnigear class."

[Bart folds his arms and looks down.]

BART
"They even have the regenerative ability due to the nanomachines."

[Taura turns to Bart.]

TAURA
"Don't be concerned about that."

[Everyone turns to Taura.]

TAURA
"I was able to obtain some data from Xenogears...
You see, Xenogears has mutagenically evolved due to its contact with Zohar.
Using that data, all of your new Gears ought to be completed soon.
Additionally, all the other weapons and armaments are being modified to implement the 'Disassembler-Device'."

[Billy turns directly towards Taura.]

BILLY
"Disassembler-Device?"

[Taura turns to Billy.]

TAURA
"In contrast to the Nanoassemblers, which create matter to repair with...
... the Disassemblers have the ability to dismantle or destroy matter.
They can even deactivate the nanomachines' restoring ability by disengaging their repair programs.
This should be sufficiently effective even against the Deus' -Seraphs-."

[Fei looks down with his hands on his hips.]

FEI
"Alright, even if we can deal with the angels...
... just how are we gonna deal with that Merkava? We can't even get close to the thing..."

[Citan turns towards Fei and extends his arms.]

CITAN
"There is no such thing as a perfect defense. There is a way."

[Citan drops his arms. Everybody turns towards him.]

CITAN
"Look over here."

[An orb hologram lights up in the center of the room. Everybody turns to it. Pan in close to the holographic orb. Scene change.]

[Scene opens on a diagram of the Merkava - it is exactly the same type of ship as the one Sophia plowed her craft into 500 years ago. The screen is green-illuminated with a red notice and orange displays indicating the firing path of the Merkava.]

CITAN
Merkava's main gun requires a 1.2 second interval to reload because of its tremendous output.
Upon firing, although it is only sectional, there will be a portion of the barrier that will be opened.
There is a 1.87 second delay before the barrier reforms in that area. If we can use this window of time to target and destroy that cannon, it will be possible to close in on it.
If we can get close enough, we can break through with gravitational-spatial correction.

[Scene fade/switch.]

[Scene fade back in on the previous conglomeration of people, same angle. The hologram turns off. Citan puts his fist on his face and then drops it.]

CITAN
"Well, this is the rough idea."

SIGURD
"Unfortunately, we don't have such a long range cannon...
... that could acquire a target in such a brief time frame."

[Bart turns to Sigurd and puts his hands on his hips.]

BART
"So what you're sayin' is we just need to shut that annoying cannon up, right?"

[Everyone turns to Bart. Scene fade. Black screen.]

FEI
"... You want to go head on into Merkava!?"

[Scene fade in above the room again. Camera above and behind Emeralda. Everybody's looking at Bart, who is flexing his arms. Sigurd also has his arms folded.]

BILLY
"Now you're being reckless again... That's suicide."

[Bart drops his arms and turns towards the center.]

BART
"No, listen. We're not going to just rush in.
The Yggdrasil IV and this Excalibur are also equipped with barriers. That's what we'll use.
Although only for a short time, we can withstand a direct hit from Merkava's main cannon.
Then we can close in and watch for that part of the barrier to go down and then destroy the cannon."

[Fei looks down and puts his hands on his hips.]

FEI
"How long will our barrier last?"

[Bart folds his arms and looks down.]

BART
"About 20 or so seconds."

[Fei turns towards Billy and extends his hands out to the sides.]

FEI
"That's all? It wouldn't matter how fast we fly.
In that amount of time, we'll be without a barrier before we can get within firing range.
And those numbers are valid only if the generator is at full drive, right?
You can only get those numbers if we sacrifice all other output and propulsion."

[Bart looks up. He turns towards Fei and flexes his arm.]

BART
"I'm not suggesting we go in with guns blazing knowing we're gonna lose.
We're going to physically put a lid on it, directly!!"

[Bart drops his arms. Fei drops his arms and turns towards Bart.]

FEI
?

[Bart extends his arms out to the sides.]

BART
"As you've said...
The Yggdrasil IV or Excalibur's barrier can't sufficiently defend against Merkava's attack.
At least with one generator, that is..."

[Bart puts his arms down.]

BILLY
"Meaning...?"

[Bart nods.]

BART
"Meaning, we can defend against the Merkava with twice the amount of time...
... 40 seconds, if we couple the 2 generators together. This way, we can make it into the heart of Merkava."

MAISON
"Then, what about the propulsion..."

[Bart turns to Maison.]

BART
"Just hear me out."

[Camera rotate to behind Chu-Chu and pan down. Rotate to look above the group. A large holographic screen is illuminated above the group behind Fei and Rico. Scene change.]

[Scene opens on another lucid green diagram, this one of the Yggdrasil IV and the Excalibur underneath it. A red triangle separates the two. A barrier diagram is in front of the Yggdrasil IV.]

BART
This is what we do... First we transform my Yggdrasil into heavy assault mode and load it onto the Excalibur so we can couple the generators.

[The diagram switches to the Yggdrasil IV attached to the top of the Excalibur. An orange triangular area is in front of the Excalibur, denoting the barrier.]

BART
By doing that, we can reduce the energy usage down to just supporting the hull of the ship and generating the barrier.
This will allow most of the energy to be devoted to generating the barrier.
Next, shift the barrier to full front and focus it to a single point where their main cannon will make its strike.

[The diagram switches. A red diagram of the "normal" Yggdrasil is seen horizontally placed in front of the Yggdrasil IV.]

BART
Now for movement. First off, we develop a barrier by engaging Excalibur's generator to maximum power.
For propulsion during that time, we'll install on the Yggdrasil those large solid rockets we got from the ruins of the Mass-driver.

[The diagram switches. The normal Yggdrasil is green and is under the Excalibur now. A red line is drawn from Yggdrasil IV to III. The barrier denotation is still there.]

BART
When Excalibur's barrier expires, we'll use the Yggdrasil IV's generator to develop a barrier.
Then we'll also detach the solid rockets and shift the Excalibur into conventional flight.

[The diagram switches. It shows a distance shot of the Excalibur and the top of the Merkava. The Yggdrasil IV is in front of a red circled area on the Merkava. A solid red line is connected between it and the Excalibur.]

BART
Using this method, we can get right in Merkava's face. After it fires, it'll be defenseless.
During this time, we'll block the muzzle of Merkava's cannon with Excalibur's bow ram.
Upon which, we should have 0.67 seconds...

[The diagram switches. The Yggdrasil IV is enveloped by a red circle in front of the Merkava. A solid line is drawn in red from it to the Excalibur.]

BART
With the cannon fire of the Excalibur, we'll destroy the Yggdrasil IV's slave generator and incapacitate the Merkava along the way, and then... we breakthrough!

[Scene fade/switch.]

[Scene fade in on the room again, above and behind Sigurd directly. The hologram turns off.]

BART
"... That's what the plan is all about.
The combination of the barriers of both ships... Storming the Merkava...
The timing of the cannon fire of the Excalibur... These are all going to be crucial.
Mess up any one of these and the consequences are going to be severe.
Hence, it'll be necessary to have both crews in synch with each other.
That's why I'd like to place Sig in command of the Excalibur."

[Bart turns to Sigurd. Sigurd drops his arms and nods.]

SIGURD
"I have no qualms with that..."

[Bart turns to Zephyr.]

BART
"What do you think, Queen? Will you lend us your battleship?"

ZEPHYR
"Since there appears to be no other alternative, let us go with that.
Please use it as you see fit."

[Citan assumes thinking mode.]

CITAN
"But are we not cutting it uncomfortably close...?
... When you calculate the arrival time and the barrier generation time, you will see what I mean!
One minor mishap will put us in a situation where we could run out of barrier power before our arrival."

[Sigurd folds his arms. Bart turns to Sigurd.]

SIGURD
"Also, we will be devoting both generators to keeping the barriers up...
Won't that leave us without permiter defenses?
We won't stand a chance if we get engaged by the -Seraph- angels on our way to Merkava."

[Fei nods.]

FEI
"We'll hold them off. You can count on us!
You guys just concentrate on taking out that main cannon."

[Bart turns to Fei.]

BART
"Thanks. We're depending on you."

[Fei turns towards Billy and extends his arm. He clasps it with his other hand.]

FEI
"Already, everywhere else has been taken out.
This is the only place that's left. This is going to be the true 'final battle'."

[Everyone turns towards Fei. Chu-Chu jumps. Camera pan up and away. Scene fade. Stop music.]

[Scene fade to white.]

[Begin music: "Flight"]

[Scene fade in on the nebulous. A still of the Yggdrasil IV standing on top of the Excalibur flying over a snow-covered area is seen.]

FEI*
We set out to silence god's ark, 'Merkava', which was the epitome of offensive and defensive power... and then storm inside it...
We initiated the operation to destroy 'Zohar'.

[Scene fade to white. Stop music.]

FMV 28: Initiating
[The Excalibur fires its thrusters. With the Yggdrasil IV coupled to the Excalibur, it charges forward. The Merkava turns its gun towards the attackers, looking eerily similar to the way it trained on Sophia's ship 500 years before. The Merkava's gun charges up and fires at the dual attack force. The barrier works and blocks the dual ship from its beam. The Excalibur continues charging head on into the beam. Scene fade to white.]

FMV 29: No Holding Back.
[The Excalibur continues to plow head on as the barrier blocks the beam from it. Scene fade.]

FMV 30: Nearing Completion
[The Yggdrasil drops the rockets it has been holding and kneels on top of the Excalibur as it speeds up. The Merkava's beam desperately tries to intensify but it has no effect on the barrier. The Excalibur accelerates and continues to plow towards the Merkava. Scene fade.]

[Scene fade to white.]

FMV 31: Blockage
[The Excalibur releases the Yggdrasil IV's coupling. It hovers off of the Excalibur. The Yggdrasil IV hovers, and then charges towards the Merkava. On top of the Yggdrasil's main ship, Brigandier turns the wheel. Yggdrasil IV moves head on towards Merkava and brings a sword down onto the Merkava's cannon. An explosion is seen. From a distance, the Merkava smolders. An escape pod flies out of the Yggdrasil IV. The Excalibur blows up the Yggdrasil IV in front of the Merkava's cannon barrel. A beeline of light extends through the Merkava and the air around it from both directions as the escape pod flies away. The Merkava erupts in a ball of fire with an explosion. The escape pod is revealed to be the original Yggdrasil ship with Brigandier standing on top of it as it flies away from the blast. The explosion blasts everything to white.]

FMV 32: Landing Gear Down
[The Merkava is smoking and on fire. Minor explosions break out of the bottom of the craft. It descends to the ground as the bottom of it is seen flaming up. It crashes into the ocean below with its bottom down. Scene fade to white.]

[Scene opens on the Yggdrasil bridge, red tinted. Sigurd is not there. Citan stands on the bridge as well as the apprentice helmsman who is driving. Billy's there along with the usual crew below the deck. The repetitive shrill alarm is sounding. Camera in front of the helmsman on the side. A radio tuner is heard. The scene tilts back and forth like a rocking boat.]

[Begin music: "Fuse"]

FEI
"That can't be!"

BILLY
"A secondary explosion...!?"

[Citan brings his arms up over his face hitting his head and then makes a fist, turning slightly to the side in frustration.]

CITAN
"Oh no! I should have known better. What a miscalculation!!
The explosion was too big. It reacted with the main condenser right under the main cannon...
... and induced a secondary explosion... How could I have been so stupid!?"

[A powerup sound is heard.]

BART
"You mean, we overdid it!?"

CITAN
"Why did I not realize it sooner!?
This means... We might have... Oh no, Elly...!"

[The sound powers down.]

FEI
"Oh... oh my gosh... Elly...!!"

[A thud is heard.]

BILLY
"W, what is it, this time?"

[The powerup sound is heard again.]

BART
"Hey, Citan! What more is going to happen!?"

[Citan turns towards the center of the bridge and assumes thinking mode.]

CITAN
"Something is happening in the center of Merkava... What could it be...!?"

[Stop music. Scene fade to white.]

FMV 33: The Beginning Of The End
[The Merkava is still flaming. All of a sudden it shatters and a strange gray-mattered being of gigantic proportions breaks out of it. It extends wing-shaped apparatuses and begins to glow reddish-orange periodically. Inside of the matter the organism from before, Deus, is seen locked in it. It extends to a cannon-like shape and a white light begins at the edge of the tip. It fires. From all directions outside Deus the world is blanketed in some kind of gray matter. Whatever the matter is, it is blowing up anything and everything that gets in its path. And that means anything on the earth's surface.]

[Begin music: "Shevat, the Wind is Calling"]

[Scene fade in on the nebulous. A shot of the destruction being caused in the previous FMV is shown.]

FEI*
At that time, the earth quaked and shook. And, from the location where the Merkava crashed, a giant object appeared.
It was Deus' final form.
The Merkava was merely its vessel. Deus evolved through the use of Krelian's nanomachines into a planetary scale weapon and began terraforming.
It was attempting to convert this entire planet into a weapon...
We retreated back to the base at the snow plains to form a new strategy...
We decided to go back into Deus. Time was running out for us.

[Scene fade.]

[Scene opens on a basement-room in Shevat style. Fei, Citan and Bart go up the walkway. Scene change.]

[Scene opens in a frozen over pond much like the one underneath the city of Aphel Aura (see Chapter 37). Fei walks up to an agent, who explains.]

SHEVAT AGENT
Though this base is the last refuge for humans... as you can no doubt see we have almost no supplies.
Anyway, we're using a fallen piece of Shevat as the main base... But, you probably could have guessed that, huh.
If we can take out Deus even one day sooner... We can't hold out much longer like this.

[Fei and his friends walk up to a salesman next to some small birds.]

SALESMAN
Hey, aren't these Picotiles cute? They're going 'cheap, cheap' too! How about it?
Wanna buy my Picotiles?
[Buy Picotiles!]

SALESMAN
Alright! 20000G for the lot! And no haggling for a discount! So pay up!

NOTICE
Forced to pay 20000G.

[Four money sounds.]

SALESMAN
Thanks. They're really delicious if you grill them...

[The Picotiles chirp and fly away. The salesman looks at them as they fly by.]

SALESMAN
Aaaaaaaah...!!

[The salesman turns around and pauses.]

SALESMAN
I know nothing! ...Nothing!

[The salesman turns around again.]

SALESMAN
I'm not giving you your money back! They ran away after I sold them to you.

[Fei discovers a Stepping Stone where the Picotiles were. The group takes it up. Scene change.]

[Scene open on a darkened room. It was where the Chu-Chus once lived, but nothing is there now. Fei walks up to a table and looks down at it.]

FEI
"This is... that strange old grandpa Chu-chu's precious treasure...
I wonder what happened to him when Shevat crashed down to earth... I haven't seen him...
His treasure... Can we just take it...? I'm sure he won't mind if we just borrow it..."

[Fei looks up.]

NOTICE
Received a Vivid Turban!!

[Item sound.]

NOTICE
Received some Speed Shoes!!

[Item sound.]

[Fei walks to the other table. He nods.]

FEI
"Just borrowing it. Just borrowing it.
Hey, it's not like we're grave robbers or anything! Right!?
So don't hex us, or haunt us, OK! Please... we're begging you."

NOTICE
Received a Hero Costume!!

[Item sound.]

NOTICE
Received a HerculesRing!!

[Item sound.]

[Fei and his friends examine the upper level glass cases and find stuff.]

NOTICE
Received a Yamato Belt!!

[Item sound.]

NOTICE
Received a WizardryRing!!

[Item sound.]

FEI
"Huh! This is..."

[Funny sounds accompany the next item notices.]

NOTICE
The mythical 'RPS Badge'!!
The 'H&S Badge' of legend!!
The 'Tag Badge' that even collectors go crazy over!!

FEI
"I bet that old Chu-chu guy must have been so happy...
It was displayed so nicely here... I can't take this from him."

NOTICE
Fei gently put the badge back where he found it.

FEI
"I bet that old Chu-chu guy must have been so very happy...
It's polished, so shiny... and displayed so nicely here..."

[The group returns to the main floor and goes down through a long passageway. Scene change.]

[Scene opens in the dungeon level. Fei runs down to the lowest level and finds a woman there.]

WOMAN
I have a stupid son, you know. He used to fish for a living, but one day, he said he saw a merman city on the sea floor...
Since then he hasn't gone out to sea, he's become a landlubber... We haven't seen him these past few years, I don't know what he's doing now.

[The woman looks at Fei.]

WOMAN
Hey, you have a rare stone there, too. Is it a mermaid's tear...? They're tough to find.
My son wore one as a good luck charm. I wonder if there is a girl out there fit to wear your stone?

[Fei goes back up and goes in a side door. Scene change.]

[Scene opens in the triangular block room. Fei walks up to the official there.]

SHEVAT OFFICIAL
I guess I wasn't supposed to have used this... I'm sorry I caused you so much trouble.

[The group walks down another passageway and through a door. Scene change.]

[Scene opens in a run-down room, the same as the broken house's lower floor in Shevat (see Chapter 37). Fei walks to a wall and hears a squeak.]

FEI
"This... might open..."

[Fei opens a shutter to see a mirror and dances in front of it. (Why? Who knows :P). They return to the previous chamber. Scene change.]

[Scene opens in the previous chamber. Fei's group walks to the other side, and suddenly a voice is heard.]

CHILD'S VOICE
You're not my dad!!

WOMAN'S VOICE
Lance!!

[A dolphin child runs past Fei and his friends. They walk into the room. Hans is standing there, along with a woman dolphin, Anna, and another child dolphin, Kanna. Camera pan to behind Hans on the side.]

FEI
"Hans! Is that you!?"

HANS
"You...! You're alive!?"

FEI
"Yeah, you too... But if you're here, that means the Thames was..."

HANS
"The Thames... sank. The 'Angels' attacked...
The Thames withstood the onslaught of Reapers, but was defenseless against those 'Angels'...
Hardly anyone got out in time... They went down with the Thames..."

BART
"Wha... wait a minute. What about the Captain? He's okay, right?"

[Hans turns around.]

HANS
"The Captain... said... he'd watch the end of the Thames with his own eyes..."

BART
"Y, you're kidding, right? That ol' guy died... No way..."

[Hans turns back to Fei's group quickly.]

HANS
"No! The Captain is alive. He is the kind that never keels over..."

[Fei walks around to the dolphins.]

"Some flashy woman in Thames taught me a card game.
Do you wanna play?"

Then it's a challenge!

[Fei, Citan and Bart play cards. After the first win, she hands over the Emer. Jr. Doll. The trio beats Kanna at cards five times in a row.]

KANNA
"I give up! I never thought I'd lose five times in a row.
You're pretty good. I'll give you this."

[Received Elly Jr. Doll.]

[Item sound.]

ANNA
"It hasn't been that long since my husband died...
Please don't think I'm a loose woman... But it's because of this man that I... (blush)..."

[Fei talks to Hans. Fade music.]

FEI
"So, what's happened with you lately. I didn't know you had a son?
The kid who just left... seemed pretty angry about something."

[Hans turns to Fei.]

HANS
"I'm embarrassed you just saw that.
I got married just before the Thames went down."

[Hans turns to Anna.]

HANS
"Her name is Anna. She's my wife. She was saved by the Thames when the ships were attacked by Reapers.
Unfortunately, that's when she lost her husband... Don't misunderstand me.
It wasn't out of feeling sorry for her or anything like that... Or... Well, perhaps it was...
I just wanted to protect her, that's all. If you call that feeling sorry, then I suppose I don't mind.
The Captain teased me mercilessly. He said...
'What! A cold guy like you, seducing a widow? Just make sure the kid doesn't hate you...'
Ha, ha... I guess the Captain was right. My stepson doesn't like me yet. But I'm hoping someday..."

[Hans turns to Fei.]

FEI
"I see... Boy, you've changed!"

HANS
"Ha, ha. You've changed too, Fei. I don't know how to explain it, but...
As for me... well, I don't know what it is... I guess I've always had someone protecting me..."

"Hans..."

[Camera pan slowly in to behind Hans directly.]

HANS
"Fei, I believe..."

[Hans turns to the entrance. Footsteps are heard. A ghostly image of the Captain of the Thames walks into the doorway.]

HANS
"I believe that one day, the Captain will come down that stairway...
Tap-tap-tapping with his cane..."

[Hans pauses.]

HANS
"And he'll say...
'Haaaans! It looks like we'll get our hands on a priceless treasure!
What kind of face is that? You don't believe me, huh? This time it's true... honest!' "

[Hans turns towards camera, towards the wall.]

HANS
"... Maybe someday..."

[Begin music: "Thames, Man of the Sea"]

CAPTAIN
"Haaaans! It looks like we'll get our hands on a priceless treasure!"

[The captain fades in solid! Everyone turns towards him.]

HANS

CAPTAIN
"What kind of face is that!?"

[Hans walks up a step towards the captain slowly.]

HANS
"Ca, ca, cap..."

[Hans runs up to the captain quickly in delight. Camera pan towards the captain to behind Hans on the side.]

HANS
"Captain------!!"

CAPTAIN
"What's this shouting out 'Ca, ca, captain------!!'? Cut it out, you fool!"

[Hans stops flailing.]

HANS
"Do, you know how much I was worried about you!?"

CAPTAIN
"Hah! I've been telling you all along.
Don't you get it? Now listen..."

[Scene cut to behind Hans on the opposite side. The captain turns towards camera and thrusts his rod out.]

CAPTAIN
"Men...!"

[Scene cut to the other side of Hans. The captain turns towards camera and thrusts his rod out to the other side.]

CAPTAIN
"Of the sea...!"

[Scene cut to behind the Captain in the doorway. Pan in closer. The captain turns towards camera and sheathes his rod with an emphatic bang.]

CAPTAIN
"Never say die!"

[The captain laughs.]

CAPTAIN
"Gha, ha, ha, ha-a-a-a!!"

[Scene fade/switch. Scene fade in behind and above Anna on the side at a distance.]

HANS
"You... are... such... a..."

[The captain turns to Hans.]

CAPTAIN
"Hans! This time it's true!
It's an island with buried treasure. It's called 'Duneman Isle'.
An ancient hero defeated a monster there, and now legend has it, his fabled sword rests there."

HANS
"What info. do you have...? Do you know where the place is? What about a ship?"

CAPTAIN
"Don't know where it is! Don't have a ship! Don't worry with details!
Don't you know that attitude of yours is why that kid won't take to you?"

HANS
"That's none of your business!"

CAPTAIN
"Well, by the time that kid actually decides to like you...
I'll have managed to get a new ship. Till then, give it all for your family, lad!!

[The captain laughs and leaves.]

[Fei and the others head back up to the main chamber. The captain has stopped there.]

[Scene opens in the main chamber of the Snowfield Hideout. Fei and his friends continue through a populated passageway. Scene change.]

[Scene opens in a large technological room with several children, a host of Aveh and Kislev soldiers and a Shevat official, as well as Nisan sect members all congregated. The kids are running around the room.]

[The soldier is interrupted by the official who turns to the Nisan sect member by the wall.]

[Camera pan over to the Nisan member as she turns towards the Shevat official.]

You want the children to stand in the cold hallway!? This is the warmest room. Why can't they stay here?

[Camera pan back to behind the official.]

SHEVAT OFFICIAL
We're having a very important meeting. They're disturbing us.

[Camera pan back to the Nisan member.]

NISAN SECT MEMBER
Please don't get so upset. I really appreciate that you're trying to protect us.
But you know those people are the only ones who can change our fate... don't you?

[Fei's group leaves and heads over a snowbank. Scene change.]

[Scene opens in a side room where Fei finds Midori and Dan.]

"Fei... I was scared a little, but not really scared.
Cause I knew that inside of that monster, you were doing all you could to fight it, Fei. I knew it."

[Fei kneels in front of Midori.]

FEI
"Midori! I had better give this back to you... It's your precious ring, right?

"Yep, we, are all fine.
Fei, you be careful too.

[Dan turns to the back wall and nods.]

"So... to forgive you, or not to forgive you... Well... that's not the problem!
It's not like it's gonna turn back things the way they were... but... errh, it's just...
I don't know how to say it properly, but I'm sorry... I... I, errh... I...!"

[Fei looks down at Dan.]

FEI
"It's alright, Dan. ... Enough already. I understand.
It is my fault. I'm sorry I caused you such pain..."

"I'm just glad that I could finally make peace with you. Take care, kiddo."

[Fei and his friends leave and walk up the snowbank. Scene change.]

[Scene opens on the fallen Shevat palace tower. Snow falls silently onto everything. At the top of the tower, Fei finds Zephyr. Camera rotate to behind Zephyr on the side and pan up slowly. She continues to look out the tower.]

ZEPHYR
"The snow keeps falling... Softly covering up everything in this world...
Our sorrow, our defilement, our mistakes... If only we could wipe away these things as easily as that...
What have we... have I... been doing... been pursuing... for these past 500 years?"

[Zephyr turns to Fei's group.]

ZEPHYR
"By the way... How is the person you rescued from Merkava?
I heard he recovered consciousness..."

[Citan nods. He walks to the edge of the tower at Zephyr's side.]

CITAN
"Yes, well, at first, he had lost faith in himself but now he is better.
Kahr has revived himself, and has found some real meaning in his life.
If he decides to fight on our side, then our total fighting power shall be greatly increased."

[Stop music. Scene change.]

[Begin music: "The Treasure that Cannot be Stolen"]

[Scene opens on the Yggdrasil infirmary. Citan and Sigurd stand at the back wall. Ramsus stands in front of them. Camera behind Sigurd on the side. Citan extends his arms.]

CITAN
"Kahr... Please listen to me!
Right now, we must forget about being friend or foe. We all must support one another, regardless...
Right now, we need your help!"

RAMSUS
"... I... am... just trash...
... a... reject..."

[Citan quickly moves up to Ramsus and slaps him. Ramsus falls on his knees.]

CITAN
"Stop feeling sorry for yourself and pull yourself together, man!!"

[Sigurd moves a couple of steps in Citan's direction.]

SIGURD
"Hyuga!? What are you..."

[Citan stands up. He looks down at Ramsus.]

CITAN
"Trash... Reject...
You can take pity and call yourself that all you want, but what about them!?"

[Camera rotate around to the opposite side behind Citan, revealing the four Elements standing at the door. Citan walks to the back wall and assumes thinking mode.]

CITAN
"Are these women stupid, or trash, or rejects too, for believing in you?
The reasons why you helped the girls, who had no one to turn to, may not have been that noble...
But in spite of that, they stuck with you. Do you know why?"

[Citan turns to Ramsus and extends his arms again.]

CITAN
"They know you better than anybody else. They know the true kindness that exists inside your heart.
They know because they want to be loved. That is why they won't leave you.
Kahr... Do not make them into the trash or rejects that you speak of."

DOMINIA
"Commander..."

RAMSUS
"All of you..."

[Citan turns to the wall. He puts his fist on his face and then looks up.]

CITAN
"Needless to say, you are not trash or a reject...
We know that better than anyone does."

RAMSUS
"I... I didn't realize that what I've been looking for... was so close to me...
I'm... sorry... for not realizing sooner!"

DOMINIA
"Oh, Commander...!!"

[Camera pan up. Fade scene to green tint.]

[Scene fade in on the palace tower again. Fei and Zephyr stand at the edge. Camera above Fei and Zephyr.]

"So much has happened between him and I...
When this battle ends, I want to face Ramsus one on one in sport, not war, as a martial artist."

ZEPHYR
"I am sure he wishes the same thing too."

[Fei nods.]

FEI
"Perhaps..."

ZEPHYR
"Fei... May I ask you something?
About Elly... What if, even if we break Zohar's spell, she doesn't return to normal..."

FEI
"Elly will be back to her usual self! I will go on believing that.

[Citan de-equips the Kishin Sword from Fenrir.]

[The man spouts his lines again and then turns towards the group.]

Ohh... the Kishin! You sure have a novel sword.
Looks interesting! Lemme take a peek!

[Scene fade. A metallic forging sound is heard. Scene fade back in.]

MAN
This came out great! It was like turning plowshares into a sword!
Use this sword and make Deus and his legions pay!

[Fei walks down to the men's quarters. Scene change.]

[Scene opens in the men's quarters. Rico is there by himself, muttering.]

"I'll never forgive what they did to him... He did nothing wrong!"

[Fei and his friends head up to Margie's room. Scene change.]

[Scene opens in Margie's room. Chu-Chu, curiously, isn't there.]

MARGIE
"You're the only ones who can save us... We're counting on you!"

[Stop music.]

MARGIE
"Young master... You better not die! Promise me!!"

[Bart turns to Margie.]

[Margie switches Emeralda in for Bart. Fei heads for the Gear dock and while examining the Gears, sees something strange in the dock Vierge used to use. He walks over there. Scene change. Stop music.]

[Begin music: "The Sky, The Clouds, and You"]

[Scene opens in Elly's dock. Giant Chu-Chu is stationed there! The mechanic lets the trio examine it, but then notices something funny about it and turns to Chu-Chu.]

MECHANIC
This is... huh, Chu-chu!? What in the world are you doing here!?
You don't need any maintenance work!!
You're in the way! Go eat some food and take a nap or sumthin'!

[Camera pan in to behind the mechanic. Chu-Chu turns around and blinks.]

CHU-CHU
"I'm exhauschued chu! Since you're here... I'd like a massage!!
Just kidding..."

[Stop music. Chu-Chu turns back around.]

[Begin music: "Lost and Broken Heart"]

"Elly, she was so kind... I know I'm not the only one chu miss her.
I know Bart, Margie, Billy, Citan, Rico, Maria, Emeralda, and Fei all do chu...
Although they don't say it, I can feel it... Standing here, I remember her kind and gentle smile.
Elly will return, won't she?"

[Fei looks down and puts his hands on his hips.]

"... Thanks, Chu-Chu...
Thanks for trying to reduce all this tension in the air for me. I'll remember this...
Anyway... Elly's gotta be alive! Right?"

[Chu-Chu turns back to Fei.]

"Fei..."

"Let's go back to the room. Margie seemed worried."

CHU-CHU
"Okay. I'll come chu!"

[Scene opens on the Yggdrasil Gear Hangar. Chu-Chu has left Elly's dock. Fei and the others return to the bridge. Scene change.]

[Scene opens on the bridge. Bart and Sigurd are there.]

"We went through a lot together...
But this one's going to be really tough... But, we won't die! We'll come back alive!
I'll be asking you to join me again when this is all over!"

[The group walks up to Sigurd. Bart looks on.]

SIGURD
"Deus integrated with Zohar and awoke...
But we've found out Deus is in the center of the giant structure created out of the fallen Merkava.
The only way we can think of to destroy Deus is to penetrate into there and make our way to the center.
That structure used to be Merkava itself, but we must assume the inside has changed significantly.
We don't know what dangers await inside of there. Please be very careful."

[Fei nods.]

FEI
"Yeah, thanks Sigurd. Let me take care of it.
I will destroy Deus. Even if it costs me everything I have..."

BART
"Fei... Are you sure about this?"

[Fei turns to Bart.]

FEI
"Bart...?"

BART
"I know what you must be thinking now. If you destroy Deus...
... the proliferation of the nanomachines that are out to turn this planet itself into a weapon will stop...
But, if you end up losing Elly, who was united with Deus for that very purpose, then what good will it be?"

FEI
"But..."

[Fei turns back to Sigurd as he begins speaking.]

SIGURD
"That's right, Fei. She's our friend who's been through a lot with us too.
I think that saving a dear friend is just as important as protecting our planet or saving the world...
What better reason is there to fight? If you can't even save your friends, then how could you save the world?
Don't you agree?"

[Bart nods.]

BART
"Yeah, Sig's right! Don't you ever give up, Fei, no matter what!
You're the only one who can release Elly from Deus' spell.
But, we'll give you as much backup as we can. So..."

[Fei nods.]

"Thanks a lot. Bart, Sigurd... I won't give up."

SIGURD
"You volunteered to fight for the young master and the rest of us.
So it's our turn to fight for you and Elly. Let's go, Fei... to gain true freedom!!"

[Fei's current allies group up.]

Death poured down on all the living... It was fate, unavoidable fate!

[Big Joe laughs and stops.]

[Camera pan slowly to the right to reveal a school of desert pirahnas bouncing towards the west. The group watches them and then Fei follows them to the west. Scene change.]

[Scene opens on top of the sand falls. The ground begins shaking.]

FEI

[The shaking is the sand shifting and Fei's group gets caught up in it. Pan back to reveal the falls at the edge of the shifting. Scene cut back to Fei. Fei manages to snag an item on the way off. The group proceeds to fall off the falls. Scene fade/switch.]

[Scene fades in on the front of the falls as the group falls off it. Scene fade.]

[Scene opens on the fall base. Fei and the others fall off the falls and then begin to walk away. Suddenly a rumble begins.]

FEI

[Pan back to reveal the base of the falls. A Wyrm lumbers into view from behind the falls. Fei and his friends turn around to see it. Camera pan to the side of Fei. The Wyrm roars. Pause music.]

[Battle: Fei/Citan/Emeralda vs. Wyrm]

[Resume music.]

[Scene fades back in. Fei and his group finish exploring the upper desert and falls, including finding a hidden sword. They then turn and start heading west after dropping back to the main level. Scene change.]

[Scene opens on the previous section of falls as the group heads towards the exit.]

VOICE
Hey, hey!

[The group heads to the west and finds a lone Duneman parked next to some sort of sand vehicle.]

DUNEMAN
Hey you, can you come here for a minute?

[The group walks up to the Duneman.]

DUNEMAN
I have a favor to ask you. Will you listen to me?
[Alright.]

DUNEMAN
I'm stuck in the sand. Can you push from the back?
[Sure.]

DUNEMAN
Thanks. Push, once I start the engine.

[The Duneman runs to the front. Fei's group walks behind the vehicle. Scene cut to the front side of the vehicle as the engine starts. Scene cut to behind Fei's group on the side.]

DUNEMAN
Okay, go ahead and push.

[Scene cut to the front side of the vehicle as the wheels spin. Scene cut back to behind Fei's group on the side.]

DUNEMAN
Push harder! A little more.

[Scene cut to the front side of the vehicle as the wheels spin and then the vehicle is freed. Camera pan back and rotate to reveal the Duneman on top of the vehicle.]

That was a big help, thanks. I'm going to the outlet of this island. Do you want a ride?

[The Duneman hops in a shaft. Fei's group follows. The vehicle moves off. Stop music. Scene fade.]

[Scene opens outside Citan's house. The group heads for the back structure where the Land Crab is sitting on top of it. They enter. Scene change.]

[The Yggdrasil takes off and flies to a lighthouse east of the 'Ethos' H.Q. It lands there.]

[Xenogears, Fenrir and Crescens disembark and enter the lighthouse. Stop music. Scene change.]

[Scene opens outside the lighthouse. Xenogears, Fenrir and Crescens are in front of it.]

"The base of this lighthouse was built several thousand years ago.
Islanders added a light to make it into a lighthouse. But no one knows what it really is."

[The trio enters the lighthouse. Scene fade.]

[Scene opens on the lighthouse shaft. The trio are riding an elevator deep into the ground. Scene fade.]

[Scene opens underground. A huge city's ruins are seen. Pan over to the right to see the Gears entering, and they are half the size of some of the buildings.]

"... The city we saw from Emeralda's ruins...
... We've come a long way from there..."

[The Gears begin to explore the city. Fei stops at a certain point.]

"... It looks like we can get out of our Gears and go in here on foot."

[Fei, Citan and Emeralda disembark. They enter an abandoned TV studio and head up to the second floor. Scene fade.]

[Scene opens on the top of the television station. Fei walks to a monitor and punches a couple of switches. Camera behind Fei. The computer is heard working. Scene fade.]

[Scene fades in. A still of a technologically advanced aircraft squadron diagram is seen. Scene fade. Black screen.]

[Another still of some sort of delegation meeting is shown. Scene fade.]

[A still of a rather important-looking man is seen. Behind him stands a woman with a smug expression. Scene fade.]

Right before man was about to be killed out by war, a new being was born to foster the next generation.
Remember the missiles in the Mass-driver facility? That was the most important thing to the Zeboim people.
Because of that, we now are descendants of the few strong people who survived.

[A still of a large crowd being whipped into a frenzy is seen. Scene fade.]

[The computer clicks off. Scene opens on the top of the TV studio again.]

"A slipping economy... Rising crime... Urban blight...
A nation of fanatics looking for their own living space...
... believing in religious sect leaders and gathering around totalitarian rulers.
These people were cut off from the next generation, thanks to genetic damage...
... and would have died out, if left to their own devices.
So, Elly and I took the hopes of the people and created Emeralda..."

[The group leaves and heads for the next passenger door. Fei notes it, and they disembark and enter. Scene fade.]

[Scene opens in a deserted structure. Fei finds a magazine on the floor.]

Strange engines discovered in structures buried underground in ancient times, the "Sub-" or "Slave Generators" (hereafter abbreviated as "S.G."'s) have, after diverse study, become widely known to have their output divided into 3 levels.
However, it has been ascertained that a higher mode exists that far surpasses these output levels. For convenience's sake, we shall call this 'Hypermode'.
Hypermode is invoked at a certain probability when an S.G.'s attack level reaches three. The explanation below covers the various conditions and probabilities for invocation, that we have been able to ascertain at present, assuming that a S.G. has been installed into a humanoid fighting machine (or "Gear").
In all cases, a basic constant exists, which we observe to be approximately the value of 5. The probability is computed by multiplying this constant by one tenth of the percentage that the HP have been reduced.
For example, if a Gear's HP has been reduced by 50% of its total, then the chance of invocation would be 5 x 50/10 = 25 (X) So in this case, when the Attack Level reaches 3, there is a 25% chance that Hypermode will set into action.
Also, apart from this, there are modification values, which are added to the basic value accordingly with the release of each attack from levels 1 to 3. In other words, the chances of Hypermode being invoked increases the more a Gear attacks and the more the Gear is attacked.
The S.G.'s Hypermode induced by the aforementioned probability can emit immeasurable amounts of energy, so from that aspect may appear ideal for use as the master-engine of a fighting machine.
However, in reality they have not yet progressed to the level of use as power for actual warfare due to reasons such as their unpredictability and the fact that no Gear-frame exists that is rigid enough to possibly endure these energy emissions.

With a design based on the Heisenberg proposition's S Matrix, which is the solution to the Uncertainty Principle's reciprocal relationship of particles (or Cosmic Wave), it was thus also known as the 'S Matrix Engine' or 'Heisenberg Engine'.
In principle, assuming all phenomena of the immediate future, including the present, are potential phenomena, it actualizes the most convenient phenomenon amongst these active subjects as the actual phenomenon and accordingly takes advantage of the resulting energy potential displacements.

[Scene opens in another deserted room. Guess who is found at the back wall? Big Joe!]

"How do ya like my shop? Pretty good, huh?"

[Big Joe doesn't waste any time.]

BIG JOE
It's Joe's shop, so of course it's all Joe brand.
[Fei and his friends REALLY tune up their Gears.]

BIG JOE
"So? How do ya like it? Come again sometime!!"

[The group leaves. Stop music. Scene fade.]

[Begin music: "The Unknown"]

[The Gears move on, and then their pilots disembark and head down a manhole and through a deserted subway tunnel and its station. Scene change.]

[Scene opens on a huge deserted lobby. Fei, Citan and Emeralda walk through it and then Citan stops just past the corner while the other two keep walking. Pan with Fei.]

[Begin music: "June Mermaid"]

[Fei and Emeralda walk to the center and look out at the lobby. Camera behind Fei.]

FEI
"... Where are we...?"

[In front of Fei and Emeralda appear two holographic images. One of them appears to be Elly, wearing civilian clothing. The other one is a man who looks exactly like Fei, but he is wearing a tuxedo. Camera pan up to behind the two appearances. People fade in in the lobby and colored lights begin to float in the air in the lobby. This is a flashback. Scene change.]

[Scene opens in the lobby of Zeboim, 4000 years ago. A huge christmas tree is in the center of the Rockefeller Plaza-like structure. Pan up to the star on top of the tree. Pan down to behind the familiar duo. Scene cut to behind Kim (the man who resembles Fei) on the side as they look out at the tree.]

KIM
"Congratulations, Elly. Another year has come and past."

ELLY
"Yes, Happy New Year, Kim!
I don't know what it is, but just now... you sounded like an old person speaking."

KIM
"No, well, this time last year I never thought the war would come this far."

ELLY
"... Yes. But we managed to get by without getting involved."

KIM
"But, it's not over yet. Why, at this very moment people are still dying."

ELLY
"... Let's stop talking about this...
Let's not dwell on the past year... Not at the start of a new year."

KIM
"Yes, well... today, at least, I want to spend a day without worrying."

[Camera rotate and pan down to behind the duo to look up at the tree. Scene change.]

[Scene opens behind some artificial plants in a skylighted restaurant. Camera pan up to a table that Kim and Elly are sitting at opposite ends of. Rotate to behind Kim on the side. Elly is looking down as if something is really bothering her. Kim has his arms folded.]

KIM
"Stupid! Idiots! A bunch of fools!"

ELLY
"Kim... you're too loud."

KIM
"I don't care if they hear me. All the people here are also fools!"

ELLY
"Kim!!"

KIM
"Think about it.
What's the purpose of fighting each other on such a tiny planet as this?
Fighting out of fear of being hunted into a corner...
Rushing in to fight as if there were only so many 'reserved seats' to the right of life..."

[Scene cut to behind Elly on the side.]

KIM
"Starting a war is stupid. Inciting it is also stupid.
Killing people as an act of terrorism or as a protest against wars that kill people is just as stupid.
You're all fools!"

ELLY
"... Kim, I felt sorry for that child.
But I don't think people in Ravine destroyed the generator with that intention.
They don't have any other ways to express themselves.
The government is the one to blame."

KIM
"Is that a good enough reason for that child, or those dead people?
It wasn't much of an operation. It was difficult, but there was enough chance to win...
We'd have won if we had better equipment...
That child would have been saved if there was electricity..."

[Kim pauses.]

KIM
"It's not just that child.
Five people died in my hospital. The ICU didn't function..."

[Scene cut to below the plants. Camera pan up slowly to Kim in between the plants on the opposite side.]

KIM
"Stupid. Just fools. Humans, creatures are meant to live.
Why do they want to die out? Why do they strangle themselves?
Humans are defective creatures. A bunch of fools!
That's why genetic damage is up lately. The birth rate is also going down.
Only 30 years to live... Nature, this planet, won't allow humans to live any longer than that."

ELLY
"..."

[Scene cut to above and behind Kim on the side.]

ELLY
"Am I... a fool, too?"

KIM
"Huh...?"

ELLY
"I had a physical at the hospital today...
They said I can't have children because of hereditary genetic damage."

[Elly looks up and turns slightly towards the side.]

ELLY
"... I can't create life. I am a creature waiting to become extinct.
... Am I also a fool?"

KIM
"..."

[Scene change.]

[Scene opens in Kim's bedroom. An aquarium floats in the background. Elly lies nude under a sheet on the bed in the foreground with her arms folded over the top of the sheet. Kim sits at the edge of the bed, wearing some pants, but no shirt.]

KIM
"..."

[Kim stands up on the bed and walks towards the left. Scene cut to behind Kim as he looks out his bedroom window. A paint easel is also seen behind the aquarium.]

KIM
"... It's no good...... It's not gonna work..."

[Scene cut to side view of Elly on the bed behind the aquarium. Pan over to Kim's side.]

KIM
"Somehow we must break the spell or the humans on this planet will die out.
No, I don't care about humans... Life itself will be ruined if we don't do something..."

[Kim pauses.]

KIM
"Some... pure life... not cursed..."

[Scene cut to in front of Kim outside his window with Elly lying in the background.]

KIM
"A pure life..."

[Scene change.]

[Scene opens in the circular chamber at the bottom of the Zeboim ruins (see Chapter 34). Kim and Elly stand in front of the test tube Emeralda at the bottom of the chamber. Kim is wearing a lab coat. Camera pan down to Kim's side as he examines Emeralda.]

KIM
"This, this is the new spirit vessel that will break the curse."

[Kim pauses.]

KIM
"It hasn't awakened yet.
The form was created by nanomachines, but neural simulation hasn't been done by the Assembler Tower yet.
It's physically stable, but still doesn't function as a living creature yet."

ELLY
"A nanomachine colony..."

[Scene cut to above and behind Kim.]

KIM
"No matter how many times we rewrite the heredity codes...
... the impressions embedded in our bodies cannot be stopped.
It was necessary to pursue this further. We had to recreate the molecular... no...
... actually the atomic level, by referring to the structural patterns of you and I."

[Kim continues.]

KIM
"This child... holds our futures and possibilities..."

ELLY
"Can this child be the angel who can give us more time?"

[Camera pan back and away slowly. Scene change.]

[Scene opens on the floor of the lobby area, present day. Fade music. Pan back to behind Fei and Emeralda looking out at the desolate remains of the lobby.]

EMERALDA
"... I, remember...
long ago... you...... Kim,... died...
right before town died... It was because soldiers of town... tried use me..."

FEI
"... That's right...
The memory in my soul... It was left in me for your sake..."

EMERALDA
"While I being held... Krelian told that I...
... the ultimate 'work of art' that technology gave birth to...
Yes, I knew I was thing. Look, my body...
Different from Maria, Margie... and Elly. ... Human imitation...... but different.
Kim and Elly said... I was angel..."

FEI
"... Yes, you are the child I, or Kim, wished for.
Kim has been a part of me, in my blood - passing his memory down the generations - for the past 4000 years.
Existing for the day that the child, who Kim was never able to embrace for so long, would be born."

[Emeralda turns to Fei.]

[Begin music: "The Treasure that Cannot be Stolen"]

EMERALDA
"Fei! Thank for being substitute Kim till now! But, it okay...
I be strong and make Kim and Elly proud that I their child!"

[Emeralda stops.]

EMERALDA
"... W, wha...?
Fei... body... so... h... hot..."

[Emeralda walks in front of Fei.]

EMERALDA
"Fei... hold me... tight... Don't let go."

[A blue flaming aura appears about Emeralda. A high ding is heard and the screen tints green for a second. When the scene returns to normal, Emeralda walks out to her previous position facing camera... but... she's grown about 10 years!]

EMERALDA
"... Fei... body..."

[Emeralda turns to Fei and then spins around. She turns to Fei again.]

EMERALDA
"... I became adult... adult... I...
I not get in your way anymore!!"

[Citan joins the two, and they leave back to the main area. Scene change.]

[Begin music: "The Unknown"]

[The Gears leave Zeboim and the lighthouse. Scene fade.]

[Begin music: "Emotions"]

[The group boards the Yggdrasil and flies back to the Snowfield Hideout, disembarks and enters. Scene change.]

[Begin music: "Shevat, the Wind is Calling"]

[Scene opens in the Snowfield Hideout. Fei heads for the bottom level. Scene change.]

[Scene opens in the prison corridor. They find the woman at the bottom again.]

WOMAN
I have a stupid son, you know. He used to fish for a living, but one day, he said he saw a merman city on the sea floor...
Since then he hasn't gone out to sea, he's become a landlubber... We haven't seen him these past few years, I don't know what he's doing now.

[The woman looks at Fei.]

WOMAN
Hey, you have a rare stone there too. Is it a mermaid's tear...? They're tough to find.
And you, girl... You have the most amazing eyes. Like they're an ocean treasure or something... So, let me borrow that stone for a bit.

[The woman turns to the side.]

WOMAN
Long ago, I used to be a famous designer. See, it's ready.

[The woman turns back.]

WOMAN
You can take this. Good luck. Just don't get taken in by any strange men now, love!

NOTICE
Received a Mermaid Ring!

[Item sound.]

[Fei heads back towards the "Thames" room in the hideout. Scene change.]

[Scene opens on the south passage. Fei finds Lance talking to the captain of the Thames.]

LANCE
"I wish you were my dad. Can I call you Dad?"

[The captain turns to his side and laughs.]

CAPTAIN
"Ghar, har, har! That's a laugh...
A walrus with a penguin for a son! Ghar, har, har!"

[The captain turns back to Lance.]

LANCE
"I'm not a penguin! I'm a dolphin!!"

CAPTAIN
"Oh? Hans is a penguin."

LANCE
"My dad is a dolphin, too!
Oops... Forget what I just said. I didn't mean to call him dad! Who would want a father like him!?"

[The captain turns to his side and laughs.]

CAPTAIN
"Ghar, har, har, ha-a-a!!"

[Lance turns to Fei's group.]

LANCE
"He is teaching me about the spirit of the men of the sea!"

[The group leaves the hideout. Scene fade. Stop music.]

[Scene opens outside the hideout. The Gears board the Yggdrasil.]

[The Yggdrasil heads to the northwest. Along the way, Fei goes inside and switches Bart in for Emeralda. The Yggdrasil heads for a strange structure in the northwest... Deus!!! Stop music. Scene change.]

[Begin music: "Omen"]

[Scene opens on a section of the fallen Merkava as Xenogears, Fenrir and Andvari have arrived. A trap door opens in front of them and they jump in. Stop music. Scene change.]

[Scene opens in a corridor of the Merkava as the Gears fall in through a beam of sunlight.]

FEI
"The mapping of the inside of Deus is now complete.
Okay! Let's go, everyone!"

[The group progresses into the fallen Merkava and down a wind tunnel. Scene change.]

[Begin music: "Omen"]

[Scene opens in an elaborate piping system. Xenogears and its allies drop off the first structure and walk to the end of a gangplank.]

CITAN
"Fei, over there..."

[Camera pan down to another circular structure with a hole in it.]

BART
"It looks like we can go down through there."

[Camera pan back. Xenogears and its allies continue on and find a lever switch on top of one of the structures.]

CITAN
"What might this be...?"

BART
"Let's check it out."

[Xenogears pushes the lever to discover it rotates certain bridges. With this known, the three Gears operate the system so they can reach the lower levels. They eventually get to the hole they saw earlier.]

BART
"Fei, let's go."
[Jump in the gate.]

FEI
"Okay, here we go!"

[The three Gears jump in a hole. Stop music. Scene change.]

[Scene opens in another wind tunnel, but this one takes them more up than down. Scene change.]

[Begin music: "Omen"]

[Scene opens in a familiar chamber as Xenogears and its cohorts slowly descend past Nisan angel likenesses to the floor... the very same area that the group visited in the Merkava previously (see Chapter 56). Xenogears begins descending. Scene change.]

[Scene opens again and rotates around Xenogears as its group slowly descends between the two angels. Scene change.]

[Scene opens at the bottom. Xenogears lands on the floor. The group finds Shopkeep Johnny nearby and repair their Gears, then they return to the main chamber and head through the passageways. Scene change.]

[Scene opens in the room where Elly became Miang (see Chapter 56). The organism Deus is gone from the huge pool.]

NOTICE
Do you want to jump inside?
[Yes.]

[The group jumps inside. Stop music. Scene change.]

[Flash scene to white. Fade in on a elaborate looking chamber with loads of wavy activity flowing down the walls, floor and ceiling. Four orbs surround and rotate around the center circular-looking structure. Pan down to behind all of the Gears. Xenogears, Fenrir, Andvari, Renmazuo, Stier, Chu-Chu, Seibzehn and Crescens are all there.]

FEI
"This is... Deus!?"

CHU-CHU
"What are those four orbs spinning around it?"

MARIA
"It seems as if the power of those four things is supporting the center."

RICO
"So that means that big thing in the middle is the core of Deus?"

CITAN
"Probably."

[Pan up to above the center structure to see an oval-shaped structure similar to the four orbs.]

BART
"Who cares about those orbs. Let's just crush the core."

CITAN
"Striking directly at the center rather than using fuel unnecessarily...
That is one strategy. But, I believe another plan of attack would be to defeat its surroundings first.
If we decide to attack the supporting orbs first, then it might be wise to leave the battles up to us.
We should be able to do something about them without using up Fei's power."

EMERALDA
"That'll allow him to use the full power of Xenogears...
... To defeat Deus. And yes, of course, to save Elly!"

BILLY
"Whether we do a direct strike to the core or take down the supports first...
I guess that is best left up to Fei to decide..."

FEI
"... Thanks, everyone.
To attack Deus directly... or, to take out its supports first... I wonder which is best?"

[Pan back down. Fei makes use of a blue floating memory cube. Party switches to: Chu-Chu, Maria and Emeralda.]

[The decision is made to take out the four orbs.]

[Stop music. The four orbs have been disposed of. The party switches to Fei, Citan and Bart. They charge the core!]

[Begin music: "Awakening"]

[Battle: Xenogears/Fenrir/Andvari vs. Deus]

[The three Gears knock Deus out! Stop music. The scene flashes to bright white. It fades back into reveal that Deus is malfunctioning and becomes enveloped in a noisy beam of bluish white light. Scene fade to white.]

[----End battle mode----]

[Scene fades back in on the room. All activity in the room has been halted. The Gears hover underneath the core structure of Deus. Pan back slowly and darken scene. Upon further notice, only Xenogears is still moving.]

FEI
"What... happened?"

RICO
"My Gear won't budge anymore."

CITAN
"The Zohar Modifier has ceased functioning.
That is probably the reason why our Gears cannot move anymore.
There is only a slight energy response coming from the core now."

FEI
"What about Elly? What's happening to her inside of that thing?
The Deus system's bind on her should have worn off now.
So why aren't we getting any kind of response!? You don't think we hurt her in that battle too...!?"

CITAN
"Fei, calm down!
The sensors are picking up a response from a life form within Deus.
It is probably Elly. So do not worry... I believe she is okay!"

[Scene fade/switch. Scene fade in on the side of Xenogears.]

FEI
"Elly! Can you hear me, Elly!? Deus is no longer active.
It's all over now... So come out of there. Show me your face! Elly! Elly!"

[A rumble. The core begins to spin and crackle again, and begins a low hum.]

BART
"W, what the...? What's happening...!?"

FEI
"Doc!? What's going on? What's wrong?"

[Camera pan back to behind the Gear group on the side.]

CITAN
"I am now detecting a tremendous amount of energy coming from within Deus.
It seems as if something that was sealed up till now has suddenly been freed and is growing enormously..."

FEI
"It couldn't be... the 'Wave Existence'!?"

BART
"The 'Wave Existence'?"

FEI
"That's gotta be it.
The 'Wave Existence' was just freed from its 'cage of fleshly existence' in Zohar...
It's probably attempting to return to the higher dimension that it originally came from."

CITAN
"Which means... this is the aftereffect of the dimensional shift!?"

RICO
"What do you mean... 'aftereffect'!?"

CITAN
"It is like a shock wave that is induced by the dimensional displacement.
But... so much energy!? If this much energy is unleashed here now..."

FEI
"... If so much energy is unleashed... then what will happen, doc!? Tell us!"

CITAN
"... Then this planet will be annihilated!
These numbers indicate that it has more than enough energy to take out a whole planet!"

CHU-CHU
"Whatchu mean!?"

BART
"You can't be serious!?"

BILLY
"We all fought so hard... only to see this happen...!?"

FEI
"Isn't there... isn't there anything we can do?
Can't we stop the aftereffect!?"

CITAN
"Unfortunately, there is nothing we can do...
Almost all machinery, including our Gears, are out of commission due to Zohar having been shut down.
This time, there is nothing we can do... To put it to you straight... this is the end for us!"

BART
"This is freakin' stupid! How the hell could it all end like this!?
What were we all fighting for up to now!?"

[White flashes accompanied by area shudders begin around the core of Deus.]

BILLY
"Th, the vibrations are intensifying..."

RICO
"Hold on a sec...! No, these vibrations are different!
It has to be something else causing it..."

[Camera rotate to behind Seibzehn.]

MARIA
"Look!"

[The core begins to move slowly away from the area, and its sounds begin to become fainter as it glides off towards the sky, until it's only a speck, while the dialogue continues.]

BART
"Deus is...!"

FEI
"Deus is rising!?"

CHU-CHU
"What is it this time!?"

CITAN
"Deus is releasing its remaining energy and is beginning to accelerate...
If it continues to accelerate at this rate, it will soon leave the atmosphere..."

FEI
"You don't think...!?"

BART
"Think what!?"

FEI
"That it's Elly!? Elly is moving Deus...!"

RICO
"Are you sure!?"

FEI
"I'm sure of it!
Elly is trying to save us by moving Deus away from our planet!
She's going to sacrifice herself..."

MARIA
"That can't be... Oh, Elly..."

BILLY
"Can't we do anything...? We can't just sit here and watch this happen, can we?"

CITAN
"..."

[Begin music: "Flight"]

FEI
"Wait... There is still something I can do!"

CHU-CHU
"What is it, Fei!?"

FEI
"My Gear still works.
Without Zohar, the power source for your Gears, the only Gear that now remains active is mine.
Just like Deus, my Gear and I made contact with Zohar. We are the only ones who can move now.
I am going to go save Elly!"

CITAN
"That is absurd!
Even if you were able to catch up to Deus, you will not have enough energy to make it back!"

FEI
"Even so, I still must go. Elly's taking the whole burden upon herself!
If anything happens to her... I want to be there with her..."

BART
"Hey! Just wait a minute!
You know I'm not gonna stand by and let you commit double suicide... if that's what you're planning!"

FEI
"Bart..."

BART
"... You better come back alive, you hear!?
Promise me!! Promise me that you will come back... Then I'll let you go!!"

FEI
"... Thanks, Bart. I promise.
I promise you that I will return... with Elly!"

BART
"You better."

FEI
"Yeah, of course!"

BART
"Alright! Then get goin'!"

CITAN
"But...!"

BART
"Let's let him go, Citan.
At this point, Fei's the only one that'll be able to bring Elly back.
There's nothing we can say or do about it."

CITAN
"... You are right. Fei, keep your promise..."

BILLY
"No matter what..."

MARIA
"Fei and Elly..."

EMERALDA
"Both of you..."

RICO
"Come back home..."

CHU-CHU
"We'll be waiting for you chu!"

FEI
"I appreciate this... Bart... and the rest of you...
Well, I had better get going now... But don't worry! I will be back soon!"

[Scene cut to in front of the side of Xenogears.]

FEI
"I guess this will be the last journey you and I make together...
I'm counting on you... partner!"

[Xenogears powers up. Camera rotate to the right and pan away slowly. Xenogears' wing-shaped exhausts activate. Xenogears takes off. Camera pan around and up as it flies out of the area. Scene fade to white.]

[Scene fade in on the sky. A huge orb - Deus - is flying away. Camera at a distance behind the side of Xenogears as it rockets towards Deus. Camera pan with Xenogears at a distance. As it gets closer, the Deus Gear comes into focus and the orb barrier fades out of sight. Camera rotate to behind Xenogears. Keep rotating and begin panning down as Xenogears flies towards Deus.]

FEI
Elly!!

[Fade music. Xenogears stops rocketing in front of the Deus Gear. The sky turns white. Everything except Deus and Xenogears turns white. The background fades into the first part of space. Behind Deus, a colored vortex opens with a loud noise and Deus is proceeding towards it. Xenogears and Deus begin to eminate flashes exactly at the same time. Both of them are sucked into the vortex and pulled down into it. Scene fade to white. Scene fades out.]

[Begin music: "One Who Bares Fangs at God"]

[Scene fades in. Fei stands on a floor rippling with green-colored water like the one he met the Wave Existence in (see Chapter 58). Camera behind Fei. However, upon closer inspection, Fei is naked this time. Camera pan up and descend to behind Fei. At the back of the room, a white bubble is floating. Inside of it, nude and doubled over on her knees, is Elly!]

FEI
Where am I...!?

[Fei sees Elly's bubble.]

FEI
That's Elly! This must mean that I am inside of Deus!?

[Camera pan to the right as Fei turns in the direction of a voice. A strange wavy face is seen floating above the floor. Camera pan back a bit behind Fei.]

VOICE
Not exactly.
Your actual body is but a physical object... It has merely been absorbed into Deus' outer-shell. Only your consciousness is here.
Of course, the girl you perceive in front of you is also not a true being. Your consciousness is merely creating her image.

FEI
!?
The 'Wave Existence'...? No... that's not you...!! Who are you...?

[Fei pauses.]

FEI
It can't be...!? Is that you, Krelian!? That's right, isn't it...!? Krelian! It was you who did this to Elly!

KRELIAN
The 'Path of Sephirot' has been connected. No one can stop god from returning to his world now.
So what have you come here for, Lacan?

FEI
I came here to take the person I love back with me! So set Elly free!
The Deus' system has been destroyed. It's all over now!
So instead I ask you... What are you hoping to achieve now!?

KRELIAN
The time when all things started... The place where all things were one... I am going to return there!

FEI
What place?

[Camera pan to the left to behind Fei on the side.]

KRELIAN
Before the beginning of the universe, in the undulating waves of the higher dimension, all things were one.
It was the waves spilling out from there that created this four-dimensional universe of ours.
'Humankind' and the 'Souls of Humankind' that were born from there, are merely leftovers of those spilled waves. So...

FEI
You're going back there? Is that what you desired?

KRELIAN
Lacan... Why such reluctance to become one with the god? What attachment could you possibly have to this wretched old world?
What meaning can be found in living out such a short existence... hurting others, hurting yourself, grinding one another down... only to inevitably die and return to dust?
Why, everything we could ever desire is here... No need to be troubled by the need for love... For this place is filled with the love of god.

FEI
I have not lost hope in humans as much as you have, Krelian...
Someday humankind will come to understand one another! I sincerely believe that!

[Camera pan up to look down on the area.]

KRELIAN
How can you be so sure? Humans will never come to understand each other.
You said that she is the person you love. But can you say that you even truly understand each other?
All humans do is place themselves at a comfortable distance from each other and call that 'mutual understanding', 'spiritual unity', or 'true love'... but it is all lies!
Man cannot associate with others without first deceiving themselves. That is the way that they were created.

FEI
But one being's ego can't determine everyone's fate!
People have the right to choose their own destiny! That is why humans have free will!

[Scene fade/switch.]

[Scene fade in above the likeness of Krelian. Pan down slowly to in front of it.]

KRELIAN
And what if that 'will' itself was predetermined? What then?
Oh, what folly!? Humans are just primitive life forms that have no such things as free will...
Mankind has merely been allowed to live in an imperfect state... "as is", "as will be"...
It is for this very reason... because humans have this wretched 'will' or whatnot... that humans must experience sadness and loss.
For someone to gain something means another must lose it... It is impossible to make humankind share limited "things" and "affections"...
So I came to the conclusion that everything must be reverted back to where it all began.
To go back to when all was one... waves, and nothing else... It is not my -Human's- ego... It is the will of the 'Waves'... the will of -god-...

[Scene fade/switch.]

[Scene fade in above Fei on the front side. Pan down to the left as he faces halfway towards camera and stop at his level.]

FEI
Well, that's alright, too... We don't have to be perfect.
Actually, being imperfect makes mankind live by helping each other... That's what being human is...
That's mutual understanding! That's 'unity' and 'love'... I'm glad... no, I'm proud... to be human!

[Fei turns to the bubble Elly is encased in.]

FEI
Elly placed the future, -tomorrow-, in our hands, based on our choice... And she is working to keep Deus far from our planet.
She is also trying to heal your heart... you, who wants to journey, all alone, to be with god...
Can't you understand Elly's feelings!? Do you have to become one with god before you are able to comprehend all of this?
I understand... I know her feelings... as if they were my own...
Yes... she and I are one! We don't need god's help!!

[Scene fade/switch.]

[Scene fade in above Fei at a distance with the image of Krelian at the opposite end of the room below the camera shot, as well as Elly's bubble.]

KRELIAN
Well then, prove it to me... Show me this power of humans! Show me this -love-, that you say can make you independent of god...

[Camera pan down to behind Fei as the center ripples begin to make noise and speed up. A huge winged serpent-shaped creature with a face resembling Miang's rises up in front of Krelian's image. Scene fade/switch.]

[Scene fade in on the side of the creature. Fei's body begins to rise off the floor. Scene begins fading towards white and Xenogears appears, enveloping Fei. Scene returns to normal.]

[----Battle mode----]

[Battle: Xenogears vs. Urobolus]

[Xenogears defeats Urobolus and it slumps. Stop music. Scene fade to white. Scene fade.]

[----End battle mode----]

[Scene fade to white. Fade in in front of Elly's bubble.]

FEI
"Elly..."

[Camera pan down to behind Fei on the side as he stands underneath Elly's bubble in his nude state again.]

[Scene fade to white. Elly stands up and appears in her normal clothing for a moment, but then she turns towards Fei and becomes nude again, fully exposing her front side towards him. Camera rotate to behind Elly on the side.]

[Begin music: "The Treasure that Cannot be Stolen"]

ELLY
"Fei...
It was Krelian... Krelian released me..."

FEI
"Krelian...?"

[Camera pan back away from Elly as her body flashes periodically for a few moments. Camera pan to directly behind Elly as she stands fully extended in her bubble.]

ELLY
"Yes. I came to understand after becoming one with Krelian...
His heart was so full of sadness. That is why he desired for he and I to become one with god...
Because that would be the return to the beginning of everything... He told me...
"You should be with him..." That is what he said... You see... He already knew!
Yes, he already knew... how I felt, how you felt... But there was nothing we or he could do...
He had no choice but to go forward... even if it meant he lost all feelings, lost everything that was human!
For all humankind's sake... There was no going back... Even looking back held too many memories...
And he would have... just wanted to go back... Even though he couldn't...
So please forgive him... Krelian loved people more than anyone else..."

[Fei shakes his head.]

FEI
"I... I, somehow... knew it all along...
I just knew he was really that kind of person..."

ELLY
"... I am so sorry... Please forgive me! I was wrong...
I thought sacrificing myself in order to save others was the right thing to do...
But my actions only brought sadness to all the people who I left behind.
And that sadness gave birth to even more sadness.
As long as 'I' still live within you, my life is not just mine alone."

[Scene fade.]

[Scene fade in above the duo at the ceiling. Pan down to behind Elly on the side.]

FEI
"Elly... That isn't wrong.
To sacrifice yourself for others is a noble thing... Even if it were to benefit yourself, it's no problem.
There will always be a person healed... One or the other...
Love gains its original shine only when there's an interrelationship between the giver and the receiver.
It is incomplete when one or the other is missing... The two are one.
It was you, Elly, who taught me that. I believe that is what it means to be human...
I can now understand the true importance of it. I don't know if it's the right answer or not...
But we have a lot of time to think about it...
What Krelian himself was looking for all along... We will find the answer to it all... ourselves..."

ELLY
"Thank you... Fei!"

[Fade music.]

"Elly..."
